kiwi-fruit & coconut's

Postby river » Fri Jan 25, 2008 9:44 pm

Hi all, really quick one...

just about to add a bag of organic kiwi-fruits and an organic coconut to my online shopping.

Are these a good move to add to my diet? My searches seemed to say yes, but would like any comments.

kiwis have more vitamin c than oranges and theres plenty of research to suggest vitamin c is more important than we think. we are the only species (esp comparative to primates) that have diseases rife and it has been suggested that it is due to a significant lack of intake of this vitamin. Kiwis are the way forward. Eat the skins too, i do!

Coconuts whole...hmm waste of time in my view since i find they taste crap hence no incentive to actually use them. Am attracted by the wholesome naturalness of a hairy coconut, however. Nutritionally, they are awesome, ignore the hype, eat in moderation, but enjoy enjoy. Coconut water is also (albeit gross) a great rehydrator- whether after exercise or indeed, the morning after.

Two excellent additions, nutritionally, in my view

Most fruit is good to eat regularly. Coconuts are a point of contention because they tend to be very high in fat, especially saturated fat. There is a great deal of argument about how these (medium-chain) saturated fatty acids are used in the body. Regardless, I'd make coconuts more of an occasional treat than daily fare.

I bought a coconut once, but couldn't work how to get into the tough, hairy bastard.

After trying a hammer, a chisel, a drill, and then wacking it with a brick, I eventually dropped it from a third floor window. Phew! Too much effort...

that's why it's ok to eat them, you burn at least 350 calories just trying to get it open!

I learned how to open coconuts from watching Alton Brown on TV. Use a power drill to make a hole in one of the eyes and drain out the water. Then stick it in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. When you take it out of the oven, it will be crack. Then go at it with a hammer.

It's fun using power tools when cooking :D
