power & strength goals for 2008

Postby JP » Tue Dec 11, 2007 9:58 am

ok, it is early, but its good time to start thinking and discussing these ;)

my planned goals so far, subject to change before the year starts though.

Have put 30kg to my PL total this year, not much, but then again i have mostly aimed to improve my strongman, and now added the lemon fresh lifts to the mix as well. So the year has been very good for me i would say. I have never made mad gains anyway, and have so far been injury free, so i am happy!

First the crackpipe goals out of the way, by the next summer I HAVE TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
- 260 deadlift
- 120kg log

because those are common weights in the comps i am planning to do.

This will mean that i will put more on my total by the virtue of improved deadlift alone, so i will keep my squat goal lower.

- squat 227.5kg (7.5kg improvement)
- bench press 150 paused (current 145 touch and go)
- deadflift 600lbs/272.5kg (current 235, so 37.5kg improvement)

= total of 650kg total, 50kg improvement, which is actually in the crackpipe territory, but banking on huge improvements in the deadlift.

other goals:
- 125kg log
- 220kg oly lifting total "relatively" close to accepted rules, if not quite there
- 400lbs/182.5kg front squat
- 105kg strict press

Shit, those are conservative goals man! You need to put more crack in the pipe!

Hmm, based on gains made in the last year, and largely on fantasyland reality, mine are as follows;

Squat - 205kg - think this is doable, as isn't really a weakness for me, and steady gains should come.
Bench - won't focus on it as usual, but will still shoot for 145 by end of the year.
Deadlift - main priority really - let's say 235, higher is crack pipe, lower is not an option.

Other stuff;

Push press - 120kg
Log press - 115kg
18" deadlift - 260kg, fuck it, 270kg
Yoke - 10m with 370kg

Also - do some more OLY shit, and learn technique better on at least cleans and snatches, also do some overhead squatting too. Bodyweight - become a fucking mutant, ideally 115kg steady by end of the year, and not all power belly either.

Comps - nail novice comps, and run a few comps too. Place midway on some. Get more consistant with events, and work on weaknesses like speed and farmers. Think that's it, for now :)

According to Freddy Krueger, my goals for next year are:

Snatch 90kg
C&J 110kg
Front squat 155kg
Back squat 180kg

Squats I think are definitely doable. Snatch and C&J may or may not be pure Nightmare On Elm Street 3.

Bodyweight I'm thinking of probably going for a very lean 77kg rather than 85kg with some baggage. I'm around 80kg now, reasonably lean, but could get rid of a few kg without too many problems I think. Height-wise I'm pretty much sitting at the top end of the 77s or the bottom of the 85s, so I may as well get a few comps under my belt at 77kg.
“Begin at the beginning,” the King said gravely, “and go on till you come to the end. Then stop.”

I'm training consistently for the first time in my life. I've not weighed myself in over a year but I think my bodyweight is between 60-65kg. The most important thing in 2008 is to continue to train 2-3 times per week, when I'm in Lancaster. There will be a 4-5 week gap in the spring when I go to the Spanish state for a mountaineering trip. There will also be a longer gap, 8-12 weeks, over the summer when I will be working in Scotland and then having a trip to Scandanavia. I will be able to train during 8 out of the 12 months of 2008.

I currently can deadlift 40kg, bench 35 kg and squat 40kg.

My goals for 2008 are: deadlift 80kg, bench 65kg and squat 80kg.

Are these realistic goals?

The most important goal for me is the bench press. I want to be able to bench my bodyweight...

Hmmmm, goals for next year?

Squat: 220kg - 35kg improvement, but I should be squatting at least 5-10kg more based on my rep sets.
Bench: 155kg close grip
Deadlift: 280kg - not a priority

Push press: 130kg - this needs some work
Power clean: Technique is all over the place at the moment, but I really would like to nail this years goal of 135kg

Log press: 120kg - this needs focus, as it is shite at the moment

Yoke: 450kg for 10m and 400kg for 20m.
Farmers: 130kg for 75m no drops, 160kg for 25m no drops (high pickup on second one.
Stones: 180kg to any platform

Oh and...

Front squat: At least 150kg.

Next goals: Continue posterior chain overhaul that I started this September, focused on DL's, RDL's, and Barbell Rows. Immediate goals are 450 lb DL and Pendlay Rows for reps equal to Bench Press for reps; about 10x205. Right now I'm at about 10x160 (I started at 6x115 in September, so progress has been good). I expect to hit both of these within the first six months of the year, after that I'll reassess and see where I want to go next.

Dave, I recently joined Total Fitness as the gym I trained at for the last 6 years in Kendal has closed, I train strongman once a week near preston if I can make it . I also manage the council's gym at Salt Ayre Sports Centre but rarely train there.

i think they are, and deadlift is very conservative as well i bet. You could probably do it already given the right state of mind (slightly mad, angry, full of adrenaline ;) )

No 1 Clean and press 100kg (Current 67.5 Best 70) Ambitious but not outrageous
No 2 DL 200kg (Current 155 Best 155) I could have said 175 but I think that is going to happen without really trying so 200 is a challenge
No 3 Squat 150kg (Current 120 Best 135) Not too bothered but I need a number
No 4 Bench 100kg (Current 90 Best 97.5) right rotator cuff is a fucking war zone so I don't see this going much higher

No 5 Try a bit of strongman training a couple of times a month.

My focus is on improving my deadlift and C&P. I have set a challenging target but I don't see why not. Working these should feed back into the squat and bench too.

Other goals are:

No 1 Try to leave the house occasionally
No 2 Eat properly
No 3 Leave the house occasionally
No 4 Gain muscle but lose the lard
No 5 Talk to real people and not electronic people
No 6 Martial Arts or Yoga everyday

Sorry but had to edit to add this one. It is the most important.

No 666 STOP OBSESSING ABOUT MY BLOODY TRAINING ROUTINE!!!!

Cheers for the feedback, you are probably right about the deadlift but my approach is to take everything nice and slowly and try and avoid injury. I see the weights I'm lifting as simply tools to bulk up a bit.
