1. I'm vegan
2. I'm poor
3. I'm lifting

What foods can I get that are cheap, healthy, and a good source of calories? For example, I had some water, celery, an oat's'n'honey bar, a piece of bread for breakfast today, gonna eat a cliff bar for post workout, but that's still not many calories for 2/3 of my day...

Find a store that sells food in bulk to restaurants. I bought 25 lbs of rolled oats for $9.... you can also get mixed lentils, whole wheat flour, and other similar foods this way. By making these foods the base of your diet, you should be able to reduce cost quite a bit!

Another thing I do is make my own food bars instead of buying Clif's.

Now, I love Cliff's just because of all the vitamins they throw in there. But I would love to hear ideas for homemade bars (and how much they cost!).

I haven't a clue where I would order bulk restaurant food :?

How cheap is quinoa?

Peanut butter is probably the cheapest of nut based spreads. I usually get the crunchy variety without salt or sugar added. Around 20-25g of protein per 100g.

Bulk is definately the way to go. I'm not sure if you have a Wegmans in your area, but I go there to buy bulk Quinoa (approx. 1.99$/ lb.)and Nutritional Yeast Flakes (approx. 7.00$ / lb.@ Wegmans, extremely expensive and tough to find in Jersey, at least).

I'm sure a Whole Foods or Wild Oats has bulk options as well- but wait, you're in Colarado? I heard it's almost as easy to find health food stores there as it is in LA.

Ya it just has so much fat for the amount of protein you get, I don't like to eat too many nuts...

I will look into bulk quinoa, there is a Whole Foods not far from here, it's just usually expensive. Hopefully the quinoa is cheap. Also, I would buy some oats, but I don't really know what to do with them?

I hate it when they put honey in stuff, sometimes it seems just for the sake of saying their product has honey in it (I've seen with maple syrup even!).

Anyway, I've been trying the bulk legumes/grains recently, and it is cheap and filling. I've been especially impressed with quinoa, for some reason. Those suckers really sprout!
So far I've sprouted quinoa, buckwheat, and am working on adzuki.
