Mega-doses of B12

Postby veganmike » Sat Feb 07, 2004 10:00 pm

Did anyone experimented with mega doses of B12? I mean 1000 mcg or higher. If so, did you noticed any difference in your general well-being, stamina, strength etc.

I believe Pat Reeves has used high doses of B12 for medicinal reasons (due to the recent operations she's had it's unlikely she'll be one the board for a bit yet). My advice would be to stay away from mega-dosing with anything without having a reason for it. I often use high vit C if I suffer from a cold (1-3 grams daily), for a brief period, but that's about it for mega dosing. I say you run risks with high doses & also if you're body becomes accustomed to large doses, when you go back to a more normal intake you can suffer deficiency, or deficiency-like symptoms as your body is used to higher amounts.
Why do you want to use mega-doses of B12? What benefits do you want from taking it? If we can look at these, then maybe there are other ways to achieve it without the need for mega-dosing on anything.

Why not megadoses of B6 and Glutamine?

Anybody read anything "hard" about how much B6 you need to get the most out of glutamine? I take 10-15g of glutamine a day and about 130mg of B6 throughout the day in supplement form...hmm, that doesn't sound adequate. At night I take a B-complex (part of homemade ZMA). And my morning multi has B's in it too.

I think of this as yet another benefit of being vegan but i've been vegan for a over a year and haven't gotten sick once....i've had slight symptoms but i haven't had a full blown cold or flu in a long time. i've even been around my girlfriend when she's been horribly sick and not gotten anything. anyone else noticed this? sorry this is off topic

Imagine yourself standing under a steel plate with one hole above you. If someone poures water onto that steel plate, it is only possible for so much water to flow through that hole. It doesn't matter if someone poures 100 liters or one billion liters, the water reaching you will be limited by the size of the hole.

Same principle for B12. Absorbtion of B12 is regulated by the amount of B12 your body is capable of absorbing. The rest goes down the toilet, litterally.

Bigger doses can be injected, usually for medical reasons.

That is correct, however, even that is a depot which is accessed successively.

My point in the first reply being, its pretty much a waste of money to have a huge intake. (If you take the average vegan dose weekly, 2000microgram is enough)

BTW, you look great.

I'd say that's about right for the normal, healthy vegan

FVB (I really hate calling you that  ) I'm too skinny (as in not enough muscle mass on me, not fat-wise), but not for much longer :)
