death/black/dark metal

As a young whipper snapper i was really into my death metal. I then started to listen to music where lyrics had something to say, which ruled that music genre out

As a bit of a homage i started going through youtube for some old favourites and some new ones alike.

Anyone else into this kind of music?

Here are some gems in my opinion:

First the best one out of the way, and at the same time major idiots, Dimmu Borgir. Why is it that norwegian black metal is so damn good? Maybe they get help from the devil himself Just take a look at these clowns:

Emperor is another gem of a band from that genre, but even more dodgy politics/opinions (if possible!).

I used to also be into carcass, which is a veggie/vegan band (i learned much later!), but i couldnt find any good songs from them. Bolt Thrower was another great one, this one very typical Bolt Thrower style stuff:

Honourable mention to Amorphis, who come from the same area than me in finland and some of my childhood friends play in it. They also have vegan members in that band:

My favourite metal genre is definately black metal, unfortunately some of the best is NSBM which I dont listen to anymore out of principle... but such is life =(

I am similar JP - I used to be obessed with extreme metal as a teenager then got more into hardcore music and culture. I still like a lot of metal. Here are my top 5:



Cannibal Corpse

Master of catchy, brutal and technical death metal. The lyrics are quite funny although some of the early Chris Barnes stuff is a bit dodgy. Saw them in Manchester recently and they were great. I wish I could play guitar like this!:

Bolt Thrower

UK band, bit of different style to Cannibal Corpse. Very heavy mid-paced stuff with all songs about war. They have been going 20yrs and have barely changed their style at all. I like their latest album but my favourite would have to be 'The IVth Crusade'. You can hear how Heaven Shall Burn have been influenced by this band.



My Dying Bride

Doom metal band from Yorkshire. Their music is very depressing and slow (a bit gothic?). I like to listen to this kind of stuff sometimes, often before I go to sleep. Best album for me would have to be 'The Dreadful Hours'. 'The Light at the End of the world' and 'Turn Loose the Swans' are also essential. Suffocation

Ultra brutal and technical DM. Similat to cannibal corpse but a bit less gimmicky and catchy. They have lots of nice breakdowns which hardcore bands could learn a few things from! Favourite album would be 'Pierced from Within'.



Darkthrone

My favourite black metal band. I like the cold and raw sound of this genre. Favourite album would be 'Transylvanian hunger'. The sound is really dodgy and playing sloppy - I think it was recorded in a day on an 8 track but that is kind of the appeal. They don't take themselves seriously or have dodgy politics unlike e.g. Burzum


Jin2 - I found an amazing shop in Melbourne devoted purely to metal when I was there recently - it had like 5million death and black metal records! Incredible. Can't remember the name of the place. It was below the railway by the river. You know it?

Sweden has all the best death metal bands. Apart from the few good ones from Finland.

i'm a huge Bolt Thrower fan. bought the eye of terror cassette after reading about in White Dwarf. It's still prolly my fav metal album ever. their later stuff is good, but pales in comparrison to that one. nearly every aspect of my life has changed since i got that album, but it still holds up.

Suffocation Effigy of the Forgotten/Pierced From Within 2 fantastically brutal death metal classics.

Mortician -any of their albums are great. the vocals are the deepest gruntings of evil you'll ever hear. really minimal and really really heavy. i mean insanely ridiculously heavy. i saw them play once and the singer is terrifying

Embalmer -there was blood everywhere. pretty tough to find but a classic low fi ultra brutal lp. highly suggested

as for newer stuff:

Black Dalia Murder isn't too shoddy. nothing new or innovating but they pay homage to some of the greats.

Death Breath is f'n fantastic. it's one of the guys from Entombed playing inceredible old school death metal. instant classic!
