clicking knees

Postby JP » Tue Mar 06, 2007 11:36 am

Didnt post this to the injury forum because i hope/dont think/wish it is not one :D (might need to move this topic there later)

Anyways, my knees click sometimes quite loudly when i contract the leg, as in opposite of full extension. I need to do it with momentum though, either by squatting myself really low down, or pulling my leg towards my glutes.

It feels nice, almost like it releives some pressure.

But is it good? Any dangers in it? Where does that clicking sound come from anyway!

Mine do it too. They've actually been doing it more since I started wearing knee sleeves...It's just bubbles in the fluid that surrounds the joint bursting. Nothing to worry about.

I've now mastered the art of doing the same on my thoracic spine using a foam roller. Feels great.

I'd second what runner said, knees are a funny old joint, there's alot of stuff in there that could click. I'd keep an eye (or ear) on it and if it doesn't stop in a week or so get them checked out.

My dads knees click, grind, crunch and pop - he has osteoarthritis (I'm sure yours aren't that bad though JP :) )

I do like that saying about working with the water in the basement - I'll have to remember that.

a week????

I forgot to mention it has been clicking for about 6 months now :D

But i guess the frequency has increased now because i have been training heavyer and in strongman you actually have to walk with loads of weight rather than just sit down and get up like in powerlifting.

I think everyone's being over cautious. Popping from joints is perfectly normal. Popping knees whilst squatting is no different from manually cracking your knuckles, back, or neck. If it really was the beginning of something bad I doubt JP would be saying it feels nice. My knees have clicked and popped for as long as I can remember, even before I started lifting weights or running before that.

A yoga teacher once told class that we shouldn't worry about joints clicking, it was supposed to sound like that. ..but that was mostly about hips I think.

I've also had clicking in my knees for periods (had lots of sporting problems with them when I was a kid). This type of klicking sometimes comes when bending (with weight on) and I can feel the "click" to. ..haven't had it for a very long time though, perhaps it has something to do with getting all important minerals now, as I didn't have a good way of eating untill a few years ago. I take supplements now.

..but I guess you don't have any dietary problems, having been a vegan for so long you are probably sure you are getting the right balance of the right fatty acids, calsium, salt, vitamine D, mangan (value of it may be underestimated when it comes to joints?) and all other vitamines and minerals..?

It may have to do with how you've been working your knees, how much focus has been on building them for the task. ..I can only come up with things you have already though about.

...check the level of mangan in your diet/supplement if everything else that is important to joints is in place.

Heh funny how it's the runners who are over cautious about knee injuries (common and annoying in running).

I agree I am being pretty cautious after having some knee problems myself in the past (mine didn't click - were just agony when moving...).

After what other people have said maybe clicking isn't so bad (my joints don't click so I have no experience of that).

I'd definitely monitor it though and if it becomes painful or gives discomfort get it checked out.

My knees have been clicking when I squat too, I don't worry about sounds to much unless stuff hurts as well.

Same for me.

my left one has been clicking for years (even before i started squatting). i think its mostly weather related, but used to think it was my IT Band. it has gotten a lot better over the years and i don't even notice it and it hasn't caused any real discomfort in a couple years.

my shoulders on the other hand are quite scary. if i do a windmill my shoulder is at best poppy and at worst like grinding gears. again, it doesn't hurt, just doesn't sound right. i'll go to get it checked out by a doctor.........someday

Most of my joints click. I'd make a terrible spy trying to sneak about. Pretty much with every step I take something goes click.

I have asked specialists about this problem and even they were uncertain if it could lead to problems or not. I do have a couple of joint problems, but I believe they appeared before the clicking.

(during writing this post I have clicked my toes twice, ankle once and shoulder once) :?

Sometimes i say something intelligent, and it clicks.

=PppPpPp

Seriously tho, my knees and ankles click. And my elbows on occasion. And wrists. Toes too, but they're more like fingers, which is more common. =)
