Striking Power

Does anyone have any suggestions about what weightlifting or bodyweight exercises to do to improve upper extremity striking power (elbow strikes and punches) besides developing good technique, hitting the heavy bag, and knuckle push-ups. My kicks and knee strikes are already pretty powerful.

What website, this one? What products? There has been debate over this issue. Checkout Jimbob's training log arguements for the OHP v. Bench. http://www.veganfitness.net/forum/viewt ... c&start=90 I don't want to waste my time doing an exercise that may or may not be useless. I am still undecided. I think the verdict is still out. That's why I started this thread.

I like pull ups myself....lots of variations. Strong lats can really increase your striking "strength". But as far as pure punching power goes, you either have it to start with or you don't. I don't I hit hard, but it's a whole different feeling getting hit by someone with natural power

gain weight and keep lifting!

Really though, I noticed my standup has gotten much more powerful by working form, but also I think because of lots of shoulder work (overhead press), tricep, and upper back..

I have decided that I am going to "bag" benching and do OHP instead. I will focus on more lat and shoulder work.

Lat Pulls
Bench Dips

I think its difficult to separate exactly which parts are the most important. Though I notice when I hit the heavy bag I tend to get DOMS in my lats.

Its mainly technique I'd say, and speed. You use all your body to make a proper punch. If you got really strong arms/shoulders your punches with just the arm can of course be harder, but I doubt you knock people out.

Cade, I am familiar with www.dragondoor.com I have read every article under the martial arts strengthening and conditioning section. I have one of Mike Mahlers DVD's. Many different martial artists have different opinions about what strength training exercises are "best" for martial arts.
