Good vegan eats in Brum?

Postby Man On Bike. » Mon Nov 27, 2006 11:50 am

Hi there, I spend most of my day in Birmin'am city centre, normally take my own food with me but I do like having something hot to eat when the weather's cold.

Does anyone know of a good place to get hot food that's definitely vegan, and cheap?

I go to the Warehouse cafe sometimes but that's a bit far and it's a bit expensive too. I also go to baked potato stalls to get jacket potato and beans w/no butter, some of them are under 2 quid which is alright. Been to cafe one as well for veggie chilli baguette, which I hope is vegan - I forgot to ask, but it's just vegetables in tomato sauce with chilli so I'm 99% certain. Do you know of any other places I should try?

Been there a couple of times, but it's too far out of the city centre. I need to stay pretty central as I'm on call and need to pick stuff up as quickly as possible...

Does Pret-A-Manager on New Street still sell vegan sandwiches? I think you can also get vegan sandwiches in most big branches of Boots & Starbucks.
Meat is still murder, dairy is still rape.

Sarnies are cold though, I'm after hot food...

How about EAT? There are at least 3 EAT's in the city centre  they're getting more ubiquitous than Starbuscks FFS :( I wonder if their vegetarian soups are vegan. It might say on their website - off to check now...

waterstones pubs do vegan friendly veggie burgers, onion rings and chips - there must be several in the city centre and on broad street.

Wagamama do hot japanese food, alot of which is vegan - there must be at least one of these in the centre.

Maybe worth looking for falafal bars - i'm not sure whether there are any, but with the wide range of ethic backgrounds in brum i dont think it would be too hard to find one.

I think you mean wetherspoons! I used to work in one (christ, what the hell was I doing?!?!) and I didn't even know the veggie burgers and onion rings were vegan.

Yeah there's one next to Border's in the bull ring. Completely forgot about that place. Will check the menu out tomorrow and will go for it if it's reasonably priced.

definitely not! I think they'd go out of business.
With regards to ethnic food though, there's a jacket potato stall in five ways island, that sells carribean food too. now, obviously I'm not gonna go and have ackee and saltfish or curried goat, but their fried dumplings are gorgeous with a double helping of spicy onions.

Hi can I just sneak in on this thread and enquire where the warehouse cafe actually is? I've been in Birmingham for over 2 years now and I still haven't sampled its goods!

I usually go for cold food as it's just easier and tend to eat snacky things from Holland and Barratt like their cereal bars and flapjacks. Another quick and easy cold meal is to go to Sainsbury's up by the Cathedral and get a salad from the salad bar.

Hot food ... Hmmm if you have time there's always curry!? hehehe and down by the arcadian by the Chinese day in supermarket there's a place called the soy cafe, which I seem to remember has alot of options. Though I have yet to sample that too! It sells meat products unfortunately, but still... it may be an option for some vegan foods.

Warehouse is 5 mins from Moor street station or if going from Digbeth its in Allison st - the road that has the police station on the corner. Its down the end of the road, new opening hours are good :D the One Earth shop next door is good too - sells pasties etc some days (from screaming carrott bakery in notts)

Its only 5 mins walk from Moor st - http://www.thewarehousecafe.com/

Cafe Soya by the Arcadian or new one by the markets does do vegan and take out - they do use msg in certain dishes - i have had the tofu dishes and sweet n sour vegan 'chicken' mock meat meal, but it was so bright orange it had to have colour/msg in?

Eat sometimes have vegan soup, and theres body & being somewhere near the NIA? Not yet been.

Wetherspoons burgers are ok - def vegan im advised! think burger and drink meal is £3.99?

For those in Brum the veggie/vegan group BVV have an xmas meal at the warehouse on sat 16th Dec..

details here:

I tend to stick to Warehouse or Rooties for food, not found and falafel places yet, or Jyotis or Khazanahs if got time to go out of town.....

Awesome thanks for that. Come to think about it I think I know where you mean, I must have walked past it a few times, and considered going in there.
