Vegan jeans

I know what you're thinking...what could be non-vegan about jeans? Well, the last jeans I bought at the Gap had a patch on the back at the belt. Thought it was synthetic; turned out to be real leather. Anybody know where I can get "vegan jeans?" (Probably all over the place, but I don't know where to start looking, and I suppose most jeans companies don't classify their jeans as "vegan" or "non-vegan," because too few people care.)

Maybe you could ask Howies. They are an environmentally sound company and I wouldn't be surprised if their jeans are free from animal products. In fact I have two different pairs of Howies jeans and I'm sure there is no patch on one of them. I'm too relaxed and enjoying this bottle of (vegan) ale too much to go and have a look though...

s'funny, i was thinking of treating myself to a pair of howies, and was gonna mail them and ask about the patch (all the jeans in their winter catalogue have a rear patch which may or may not be leather). certainly, on higher end jeans, they often use leather there. also, expensive (or very very old) jeans can use a wool blend in the denim...

i love howies stuff, but they do use lambswool and merino wool in their stuff.

i'll post up here if they reply.

I got this response from the Gap, when I inquired about which jeans had leather and which did not: "Thank you for your message. Although we appreciate your interest in
our
Jeans, we are unable to address your specific inquiry, as this
information is proprietary and is not currently available for the
public..."
I replied: "Proprietary? You won't let people who choose not to wear leather know whether or not the patch is made of leather? I'm never shopping at the Gap again."

i love howies stuff, but they do use lambswool and merino wool in their stuff.

yeah, good quality stuff but it's hard finding much (in terms of womans stuff other than jeans) in their winter catalogue without merino in it, they are even putting wool and denim in some of their jeans and pretty much all jumpers, base layers and underwear are wool. I like supporting labels like this mainly because their stuff seems well made and enduring and from an environmental point of view that's the way to go, of course it's also great that they support organic cotton farmers by using organic cotton.

We should probably be more vocal to them as vegans, so they know there's a customer base out there who would like good quality organic/ technical stuf without the wool and that we'd like to see more stuff without it, especially in the winter.

I got this info from Pangea Vegan Products (www.veganstore.com): "A good percentage of the patches on the back of jeans are synthetic,
although it is often hard to tell which is synthetic and which is leather. Often you cannot tell unless you pry up the patch a little and see the backside of the material. If it is synthetic, you will find a small, uniform weaved pattern of the fabric. If it is paper, it will look smooth like paper. If the patch is leather, it will look like leather with lots of
non-uniform flecks and roughness."

find a decent fitting pair of vegan jeans and i'd buy them. i'm put together oddly (shorter lower body, huge muscular can and thighs). i spent years looking for the right jeans and finally caved in to designer jeans prices. never looked better. i try to avoid leather, but not 100% successful and don't beat myself up over it.

well, howies still haven't mailed me to let me know if they use leather in their jeans.

in the meantime, they have been swallowed up by timberland. i know nothing of timberland, other than as purveyors of those disgusting pink leather boots that were on the feet of every other scrote in wood green a couple of years back. oh well....

Ha, when I used to have a pair of DMs about 3 years back I was on the bus one day and some school kids got on and one quietly (but loud enough so everyone could hear) said about my shoes 'those are really shit Timberland copies', before I got a chance to even laugh her friend got to it saying 'no they are real ones I swear'

Anyone got an update on some good Jeans without patches?

WTF do they need to put leather patches on all jeans for anyways?!!
Went looking today and maybe 1 in 20 brands had no patch. and I cant tell if its synthetic or not.

Lee Jeans don't have patches.
