Krav Maga

Anyone practice this form here? There's a gym near me (www.kravmagadetroit.com), and I'm thinking about doing some training there. Until now, I don't have any MA experience other than some general kickboxing classes (more of a cardio thing than anything, but we get to hit bags :D)

There's a 2 lesson intro price thing (20 bucks for 2 classes, i don't know what training costs past that) that will probably answer this question a lot better, just wondering if anyone has some experiences to share.

I trained in KM ask the school manager what there fees are. The basics, first level, of KM are as follows:
Elbow Strikes (lots)
Knee Strikes (lots)
Low roundhouse kicks to knees
Front groin kicks
Front snap kicks
Palm Strikes
Hammer Fist
Some boxing
Self defense against a grab from front, side, rear
Escape from chokes
Strike from the ground, if you get knocked down and your attacker is still standing, to his knees.
Next level:
Ground self-defense, similar to BJJ
Throws similar to judo
Gun, knife, stick(baseball bat, pipe) self-defense

Instructional DVD's:
http://www.kravmaga.com/store/tek9.asp? ... cts&grp=30
I would only purchase the following DVD's first not the entire box set
KM Basic Combatives
KM The Best Defense
When I trained they offered a student discount. The fees in Philadelphia are about $99 a month for non students 12 month contract. $114 a month for a 6 month contract, maybe a little less.
It is a MA that teaches practical self-defense not sport. They do not train for competition. There is fight class which is kickboxing and some ground striking similar the MMA/NHB but you are not required to take fight class until you get more advanced.
No kata/forms
If you have anymore questions just post them. Good luck.

I train at the London CKM club (CKM = Commando Krav Maga). CKM is quite different from Krav Maga (which by the way, is more of a 'generic' term).
More info on CKM herehttp://www.commandokravmaga.com Check it out.

If you're after practical self-defense then it's definitely the way to go.

They call it 'Tactical Krav Maga', is it different from the KM techniques taught by the IKMF or IKMA? I see on the front page a knife technique that is typical of the 'traditional' KM.
In CKM, we don't deal with a knife attack the same way:

Does anyone know how many different styles of KM are taught to civilian populations worldwide?

well, there are different federations... The IKMF (International Krav Maga Federation) and the IKMA (Israeli Krav Maga Association) that are actually teaching the same techniques.

And then you've got Commando Krav Maga / Combat Survival, which is more realistic and ever-evolving. Before switching to CKM, I trained 6 months with the IKMF style. I wouldn't switch back. The CKM techniques are actually much more simple and more 'to the point'. You don't really waste time and energy punching at someone attacking you with a knife.

The 'Human Weapon' show on the History Channel is going to have an episode on Krav Maga... The chief instructor of Commando Krav Maga features on the episode too...
