Body Combat is what I lovingly call disco martial arts, it was developed as a sort of 'group fitness' meets MA workout without any contact sparring.

A class lasts between 45 and 60 mins and is divided into 4-7 minute tracks each one representing a MA or boxing style incl karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai. The routine changes every 12 weeks.

It's a tough class and I think you need good basic fitness to do it, I also think it's easier if you know a bit about martial arts before doing it. It probably looks silly to a proper martial artist!

Your training log is 16 pages long. Have you posted a sample of a typical workout session and what it consist of? How many punches, elbow strikes, knee strikes, kicks, what type of kicks, etc...? I am a martial artist but I am curious. I do not think it sounds silly it sounds cool if that is what your into.

ah, Fredrik but google doesn't tell you the nitty gritty of the classes and neither does the Les Mills website really as the routines change so fast. Some of the blogs I found when googling bc did go into a bit of detail though.

tempemma, that's a good question- details. I'm still getting to grips with MA terminology and the class is so fast that I tend to really only absorb the details of what I like, so I don't remember much of the karate stuff because I find it quite uninteresting, whereas I remember every detail of Muay Thai because I really enjoy those tracks. I don't know the names for the strikes, punches and kicks though I'm afraid. I'm going to look everything up now, so I'll get back to you on this question!

What it has taught me is a tiny bit about a wide range of MA's and that's really valuable, it'd be hard to choose a style (except karate)

oops, sorry... and here I thought I was clever, I didn't even read the web site but just looked at the lists of results from google... sorry about that

Many MA hand, elbow striking, and knee striking techniques are similar there are just different variations or called by different names. The same is true with kicks for the most part except some MA do snap kicks and others like muay thai swing the leg like a baseball bat or thrust instead of snapping the kicks. It is no big deal if you do not know. I will just research karate and tai chi because I am not as familiar with those MA as I am with the others you listed.

I see you two have been keeping my blubbery log alive in my absence

I did bugger all training last week I'm afraid, just didn't feel like training plus I had like weeklong PMS with every symptom under the sun. Bloody hormones.

Regarding swimming. I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to do more of it, I even bought a proper bathing suit because swimming in a floppy beach bikini doesn't make me feel like a serious swimmer. So I guess I'll be getting fat. Oooor ooor ooooor!!
