Imnotapunk's weightlifting log

Postby imnotapunk » Tue Mar 05, 2013 10:17 pm

I'm doing the original Starting Strength novice routine, and I'm currently in my third week. Here are my stats so far:

Height: 191 cm BW: 108 kg

Lifts:
Squat 55 kg -> 85 kg
Deadlift 60 kg -> 85 kg
Bench press 50 kg -> 57.5 kg
Press: 27.5 kg -> 32.5 kg
Power clean 30 kg -> 45 kg

I think all my progression thus far can be attributed to better form.

I don't have a link, but it looks like this:

Workout A
3x5 Squat
3x5 Bench Press
1x5 Deadlift

Workout B
3x5 Squat
3x5 Press
5x3 Power Cleans

I workout monday, wednesday and friday and alternate between the two workouts.

Today:
Squat 3x5 82.5 kg
Shoulder press 3x5 32.5 kg
Power clean 5x3 45 kg

The fifth shoulder press rep was really tough on all the sets. Definitely think the limitations of staying at a caloric deficit when weightlifting are starting to show up.

When I first started out I couldn't help but thinking "but what about all of the other stuff, shouldn't I be doing this and this and what about the dumbbells or that machine or this", but then I did the first workout and when I was struggling to walk up the stairs to my apartment and cut myself (my arms were shaky) when shaving thrice (I've never done it even once before) I was like "nope, I don't need to do any of that stuff", haha.

I think I might start working on pull/chin-ups when my presses start to plateau though, and will probably throw in another back exercise or two, given the fact that I have a family history of back problems.

good work brother, few more deadlift sets is best for strengthening the back, other than that I would go for hyper extensions

I did some pull downs, and I’m considering switching my program to the 2nd edition Starting Strength novice program which looks like this:

Workout A

3x5 Squat
3x5 Press
1x5 Deadlift/5x3 Power Clean (alternating)

Workout B

3x5 Squat
3x5 Bench Press
3x10 Back Extension
3xFailure(15 max) Chin-ups/Pull-ups (alternating)

It's really just switching when I do what, and adding some back exercises. Since the first couple of weeks of this program is identical to the one I'm currently doing, I don't think I'd be doing anything wrong that might upset Rippetoe and cause his fury to rain down on me.

I would consider adding more DL-sets, but after reading and rereading Starting Strength, I really don't want to change the way the program works.

Today was just an overall failure. Had to train in the afternoon due to an early morning presentation at school, and I was generally just stressed out. On the first rep of my first squat work set I managed to hit the squat rack on the way up, and lost my balance and ended up with the weights and the bar on the floor. No one was hurt, but it sucked. Due to how I felt at that point I decided to just count the entire training a missed attempt, and just lifted the weights I used last time and got the hell out of there. Fresh start with the revised program on friday.

Squats 2x5 87.5 kg
Bench press 3x5 57.5 kg

I also did three sets of ten back extensions/hyperextensions and three sets of three 70kg pull downs (which is all that I can manage right now).

I have a question though: Observant readers will see that I didn't progress on my bench press. The reason for this is that the smallest weights at my gym are 1.25 kg, meaning the smallest jump I can make is 2.5 kg, which I tried, but failed. How should I tackle this?

Squat 3x5 88 kg
Shoulder press 3x5 33 kg
Deadlift 1x5 90 kg

Had to switch to a high bar squat again due to discomfort in my upper right arm, which I think is a flexibility issue related only to my right upper arm because I have a problem with it when I do my stretching as well (Can't do a back hand clasp with my right arm). Also, on the last rep of my deadlift I decided to quickly change to an alternate grip because my hands were slipping. It was my first time not lifting with an overhand grip.

Squat 5 reps/3 reps/1 rep 90 kg
Bench press 3x5 60 kg

Back extension 3x10 10kg
Assisted chin-ups 3x3 -30 kg

I think I’m near stalling on the squat. According to some strength tables it is by far my strongest lift, so I guess that makes sense. I'm hoping to hit 100 kg before I have to deload though.
