Geez, goob, I'd think you could find a better gym than that! I would have no patience with people telling me I "needed" milk or steroids.

Swanky place there muppet, am very jealous. I bet he counted that as a good lift too

That kind of stuff pisses me off because it's dangerous and when they eventually hurt themselves, they'll blame squatting, when really it was stupidity that did it. Also, thats how bars get fucked. People loading up way to much weight and dumping it cause they are scared has ruined most of the bars at my gym. Only one straight bar left now. It would be a nice bar, but it's got one frozen collar and it's a bit thicker than the normal bars. Really its probably only 1mm bigger, but still a lot harder to grip. I'm sure the insurance company doesn't just let that stuff go without some sort of penalty either, so could very well cost the owners and hurt the gym overall when idiots injure themselves.

Adena wrote:Geez, goob, I'd think you could find a better gym than that! I would have no patience with people telling me I "needed" milk or steroids.

It's not so bad as it sounds really. Usually it's just me there and maybe some high school aged kids depending when I can get in, so it's not something that happens every day.

It's a combination of the shitty people and the shitty equipment that has me wanting to find a different place to train. I was okay with it all till they replaced my squat rack with a useless piece of shit. There aren't really many actual gyms in my area though, so not many options. I found out recently there is a YMCA ~20 minutes away that I will check out. It's supposed to be really nice as it's been completely renovated recently, so could be an option. Otherwise it will be 24 hour fitness or a squat rack on the lawn :)

6/7/2012
Front Squat
up to 2x5x145 lbs

clean grip not getting easier to get into, will look into some stretches/mobility stuff for this because the goofy shit I've got going on while front squatting will surely cause some problems eventually.

Overhead Press
up to 5x90 lbs

Pullups
7pb  ,6,5,4,4 grip was the problem here, been shitty the last couple weeks and just terrible today

Deadlift
up to 5x275 lbs pb for 5 i think

Standing Cable Crunches
2x20x110 lbs

these I think have helped my ab strength more than anything else I've done, way easier to keep tight now and maybe even can get tighter than before, also they don't bother my back like weighted sit ups/crunches.

Also, bodyweight up to 174.6 lbs (79.2 kg) this morning

you think it's not a good lift? I had a close look several times (i like to hold a piece of paper parrallel with the top of the knee to check) and i think he is high but not by much! Still damn impressive in my book.

edited to add: now not sure it might just go past parallel actually

The bars we have are pretty high quality and so can handle that sort of weight assuming they aren't dumped stupidly but from what I've seen these guys don't dump stupidly. Our problem just now isn't with those guys but with guys push pressing in the rack and dumping it onto the safetys.

In my view, if they can lift it then it's not stupid :) edited to add: what is stupid injury risking weight is relative to the person of course. In the case of this guy it's (almost ... given he's tiny bit high) within his range so not stupid i think.

In any case, I think i may have misunderstood what you meant.

edited to add: Regarding risk of messing up the bar: he's lifting 300kg/660lb and the Texas Power Bar is rated to 1500lb. The bars we have are even better than Texas Power Bar so at least equivalent rating :)

No gym crew is not the end of the world, put the effort in and you can develop a crew around you.
You say the big guys have moved gyms, where did they go?

Nice to see the front squats thrown in every know and again. Pullup PB, get on the pullup table!

I thought i missed something in that video because I watched it on my phone, but watched it again and definitely the spotter helped him get back up, so not impressive. Maybe the spotter did a 300 kg zercher lift after the other guy walked it out :P Now that is impressive! Definitely too heavy for that guy though, and without the spotter there he could have injured himself. Looks like a strong guy, just not 300 squat strong yet. Depth is fine though.

About bending the bars, its not the weight that bends them, it's dumping them on the pins. Even high end bars will bend if you load them up and dump it on the pins. There is a thing from Ivanko about it, http://www.ivankobarbell.com/press/how_to_bend_an_olympic_bar_2012.pdf

There were 2 really nice bars at my gym, one I'm told is a texas power bar and I really liked it before someone dropped it on the pins, the other one is the thicker bar I use now. The one good bar that bent is still straighter than another bar that had been sent off recently to be "straightened" but it's not completely straight and it's hard to use because it will roll over if you don't set it just right.

No gym crew isn't so bad, mostly i'm upset they got rid of my squat rack :( . All the equipment being fucked up isn't helping either. I had to make some sacrifices to afford my membership fees, and paying that much money to use fucked up equipment isn't something I'm happy about.

Not sure where most of the big guys have gone really. I know one guy left because of a disagreement with management and now trains at "too your health spa." Not sure how he does that though, because I was told no deadlifts when I looked into it and didn't see a squat rack. I think a couple other guys go to "24 hour fitness", other than that I don't know.

Yeah, have been doing front squats once a week for a bit. Very terrible at them now, but getting better. Want to be doing strongman and try out some oly lifting at some point, so might as well start front squatting now. Also, so much fun

Seems now that I can actually get a set of pull ups there can be some progress on them. Got 1 more rep with .2 kg weight gain

Upper back sore a fuck today. Also, left my belt in the car and was raining out, so no belt today

6/8/2012
Squat
10xbar
5x100 lbs
5x130 lbs
5x155 lbs
5x180 lbs
1x210 lbs - thought I might make a second one at least, but was not to be today
8x155 lbs

Bench
5xbar
5x70 lbs
5x90 lbs
5x105 lbs
5x120 lbs
3x140 lbs - i hate bench  was unable to get even one at this weight
8x105 lbs

left elbow was acting up, so left it at that.

I've given up on the madcow thing, I don't like everything being planned out like that. I'm thinking about squatting 5 or 6 days a week with maybe one or two other exercises. Might switch between front and back squats, but not sure if I can handle front squats so often, collar bone is still bruised to fuck from thursday and wrists always sore afterwards  .

Current general idea is squats then one or two other lifts. Probably do bench once a week, overhead once a week, maybe start doing power cleans. Go heavy when things are going well and not as heavy when things aren't.

6/11/2012
Squat
2x10xbar
1x10x95 lbs
1x5x135 lbs
1x3x185 lbs
1x1x205 lbs
1x1x225 lbs
3x2x185 lbs

Bench
1x10xbar
1x5x95 lbs
1x5x115 lbs
2x5x135 lbs

Pullups
7,5,5

grip gave out on all 3 sets, might get some straps if this keeps becoming an issue, but I think it's just been over worked the past few weeks

had meant to do some abs, but forgot, will get them tomorrow

I'm jealous that you can do pull-ups. I'm not even pulling up all that much weight, and I can only do one.

You're the opposite of me, I really like having a mundane plan to stick to! Have fun with whatever you decide to do next. Power cleans sound fun.

The secret to pull ups is to get fat, work up to doing 3 then lose 20 lbs  It took me 18 months to get from 1 pullup at 152 lbs to 7 at 174 lbs. I could have probably improved faster if it was more of a focus, but I think I will always be more concerned with getting my squat numbers up.

Speaking of squat numbers going up, this is the first post in my log from a year ago.

Goob wrote:
Height - 6'3" (190.5 cm)
Weight - 169 lbs (76.7 kg)

Squat - 170 lbs (77.1 kg)
Bench - 130 lbs (59 kg)
Deadlift - 225 lbs (102 kg)
OH Press - 85 lbs x 4 (38.6 kg)

I really need to get my squat and pressing numbers up :(

Current stats

Hieght - 6'3 (190.5 cm)
Weight - 174.6 lbs (79.4 kg) +3%

Squat - 235 lbs (106.8 kg) +38%
Bench - 160 lbs (72.7 kg) +23%
Deadlift - 315 lbs (143.2 kg) +40%
OH press - 4x100 lbs (45.5 kg) +17%
Front Squat - 170 lbs (77 kg)

terrible with math, but think those are the correct percentages  , pretty good improvement there and a bit more in the bag on everything except overhead which might be worse than that just now

6/12/2012
Squat
10xbar
10x95 lbs
5x135 lbs
2x5x190 lbs

Powercleans
complete shit
up to 5x3x75 lbs

Standing Cable Crunch
2x20x120 lbs

I think tomorrow will be max front squat, deficit deadlifts and maybe some overhead pressing

Nice! :D I knew you had improved a lot.

Pull-ups are not a focus for me either, so it's not really a big deal. Just sayin'. I remember when we were at comparable strength levels and now you're way ahead. Not that we should be at the same level, so good job. It just made me feel like a beast for a short while.

You can squat more than almost all the women and a lot of men in my gym, some of them twice your size. That makes you a beast in my book  And, to be fair, we were at more comparable bodyweight levels before

Front Squat
10xbar
10x95 lbs
5x135 lbs
3x155 lbs
1x175 lbs PB
1x185 lbs PB again
3x3@150 lbs

Deficit Deadlift from 100 lb plate ~2-3 inches
10x135 lbs
5x185 lbs
3x225 lbs
2x250 lbs - was thinking I would get 5 based on how 225 went, but was way off lol
2x5x225 lbs

from the floor
2x2x275 lbs

no squat guy came in at the start of deadlifts and wanted to work in, so took longer than I had planned, so left it at that, will do overhead tomorrow instead

Squat
10xbar
10x95 lbs
5x135 lbs
5x185 lbs
3x225 lbs :D
1x245 lbs PB (111.4 kg)
5x2x195 lbs

this is where things went to shit

Overhead Press from rack
1x5xbar
1x5x65 lbs
1x5x85 lbs
1x3x95 lbs - failed 4th ~eyeball level
3x5x85 lbs

I am liking squats every day so far, will see how it goes after a month or two. Am eating ~800-1000 more calories a day than before without even really trying and getting in 250-275 grams protein. Have eaten close to 2400 calories in pistachios the past two days, which will have to stop because that shit is expensive
