Oh yeahhh, loving it, obsessed in fact. Training 5 times a week at the mo. I just can't get enough of being close to sweaty men.

 you fight in a gi though so you don't get that proper skin-on-skin contact right?

We have a no-gi class too. Also the light in the changing rooms is permanently broken so if I want some skin-on-skin action I can get it there, and no-one need ever know.

Training in a gi is good for your technique, by the way. More fun too, and you look like an awesome ninja in his pyjamas.

I think the grappling course I want to do requires a gi so I'll get a taste of it, I quite fancy training in pyjamas. Do you prefer the gi?

^Yeah I prefer it, there are a lot more chokes available, and conversely you are a lot more vulnerable to chokes, so it makes the whole thing more interesting and technical.

There are a couple of guys at our place who only do no-gi (big strong MMA guys mostly) and they are notably less technical than the gi people.

Thanks Goob. What is your motivation for starting a martial art, that might help you decide?

Grappling today, brought a friend with me who loved the session and will continue coming along to this class with me so yay :-) Learned lots of new stuff from Anna and rolled with various partners who also taught me new things, including a woman with only one leg who was awesomly skilled. It goes too fast which I guess is a sign I'm enjoying it.

It's really hard doing proper rolling when you have no idea what you are doing and there are bigger people submitting you constantly because they know all the techniques, so I decided that it's ok and I'm beginner and that's why I'm there and to be humble and open.

After heeding your comments Clem Snide, I chatted to them and will start doing beginners BJJ on Wednesdays so I learn GI fighting too.

Love this stuff, it scares the shit out of me but it's strangely thrilling!

Too shy to add my pics to the phwoar thread but I thought I'd post some ab and upper body muscle pics to start charting my progress. A sixpack is going to be tough but I'm working on it! Trying to build up strength and mass in my shoulders too. I don't really have any specific goals other than build a little muscle and get a little stronger while doing stuff I enjoy.

Blurry pics from my Mac, I have a nice camera but taking photos of myself while holding it is tricky.

Looking strong already. Before you know it you'll be able to pick those guys up over your head.

Hanging out with sweaty people isn't enough of a reason??? I thought I'd get my fill of sweaty people when I joined a gym, but not many people sweating in my gym  .

Seriously though, mostly it's that my idea of a fighter is so much different than my idea of myself. Doing something like that would be very challenging in a different way than any other sport related things I've done in the past. For me, challenging=fun.

Goob = let me know what you decide on.

Thanks speciell :-) tattoo has been postponed until July 6th, the studio is short staffed and because I'm doing it all in one sitting it would be hard for her to do it and look after the studio alone. Rather upset as I was all psyched up for it.

Sunday 19/6

Weight trained at the fantastic Underground Training Station in Hoylake with Rach and Shellie. The session is called Steel Works and as there were only two of us we had a lot of personal attention from coach Ian Parsley.

The session lasted an hour and we did the following:

Hang cleans bar weight (20kg) 3x8
Lunges 1x30 kg/ 2x35 kg
One arm bench on stability ball 10k
Romanian deadlift 3x8 17.5kg each hand
suspension row
Dominator 25 kg 8 x each side
Suitcase walk forward and backwards 1x 17.5kg 2 x 22.5 kg
Leg raises 3 x 15 (I don't like these and don't them normally)

Enjoyed the session and the company very much and wish I lived closer so I could train with Shellie and Rach but it's rather far so it'll be a once in a month thing I think!

See you in Fighting Fit one Saturday soon Rach, and look after that tweaked back.

Like my favourite group fitness gym, Les Mills Victoria Street West in Auckland, UTS is peppered with motivational posters like the one(s) below, and I thought I'd add a pic of us too.

I've been looking on the internet and there is a Brazilian Jujitsu school not too far away from me, so I will probably try that.

The head instructor has a black belt in Kenpo karate, a brown belt in judo and a purple belt in BJJ. There is an ex-MMA fighter named Dustin Denes associated with the school also, so it must be good right??? It says he "oversees class curriculum and conducts periodic seminars." He is really good apparently, 3rd degree black belt, 2000 Brazilian champion and all that.

Sadly, all that will probably have to wait till after I find a job

Am so glad you liked it, I love my gym so much so am always a bit nervous in case others don't share the joy. What was the brand of mineral makeup you recommended? Also is it ok if I copy that picture?
