Flightlessbirds' Awkward Approach to 2011 (cycling etc.)

Postby flightlessbirds » Thu Jan 13, 2011 3:25 pm

Well I have decided to abandon 2010's training log. It started strong and then kind of piddled away into nothing. Two Oh Eleven started with my continuing to be plagued by sickness every time I start to get back into training with an enjoyable persistant cough linking various other maladies. My fitness is down from my crash and burn second half of 2010 which consisted of little motivation, little training and large amounts of stress.
Let's forget that story and embrace 2011 and all it's challenges and challenging it will be. Challenge number one: getting ready for the early season races from a poor fitness level while mainting my health. Challenge number two: fitting racing in around my fieldwork schedule which will involve probably around a 10 day trip to Greenland in April and then several weeks in June/July. Challenge three: Reducing stress in my life and getting through some personal sh!t so I stop getting sick all the time.
Plan of attack: The April trip is hopefully early enough that I can just plan an off-week, get in some running and hit training hard before and after. The June/July trip I have some potential running buddies so plan to work that in to keep up aerobic fitness. After that trip I will focus on a September race to ramp back up to.
I have been really enjoying riding to school in the snow this winter. It's not fast but it's usually challenging and a lot of fun.

There's been some skiing, running, yoga and trainer riding in the past few weeks but I'm just going to start with this week for logging.

Tuesday: Trainer (40 min) - still coming off of a cold so I kept it fairly light and spinny, just getting my legs used to things again after two weeks at the parents away from my bicycles. Felt pretty good though!

Wednesday: Ski (1 hr), Trainer (45 min) - Went for a nice afternoon ski (classic) with a friend. We blazed a trail in the park area north of campus and made ourselves a loop to go around. We didn't push too hard to give my cold a chance to clear up some more but was a decent workout for my arms and legs and my lungs are starting to feel back to normal again after almost two months of coughing.
Trainer I pushed a little harder than yesterday and my breathing again felt quite good and strong. I did a few intervals of relatively higher intensity but am still just going on feel and haven't brought out the HR monitor yet. I think it is coming out next week though, yay! This week I will keep on with getting my body warmed back up.

Friday: trainer (40 min) - pushing harder but still nothing formal. Next week, the heart rate monitor comes out and it's down to business! Tomorrow I ski. Feeling good!

Good work fb :) I know all about personal shit. Can be quite hard to handle at the time. But once you do all you can to get it sorted (one way or another), time in the end doesn't heal all wounds but goes a long way to do so. :)

Sounds cool biking to school with all the snow (it only snows to sea level once or twice a year here so I probably wouldn't have any concept). Anway good luck with your health and your goals in the coming season :)

Thanks Alistar. Life seems to be getting slowly sorted out and I'm at least back on track for training and generally enjoying life more again. Finally have a decent amount of snow for skiing again (after the first batch decided to melt while I was away over the holidays).

Saturday: X-C Ski (90 min-ish) - headed out with a couple friends after a big snow dump in the morning. Conditions were really nice. I bailed a couple times but I just count that towards it being a good ski. Chancing my friend around is always a good workout and I think my heart rate was well up for nearly the whole time. I should bring a HR monitor for a ski one of those days, out of curiosity. Anyway, fun ski, lovely day. The end.

Good to see you've started your log again flightless!

I cannot remember, what stage are you at in your PhD?

Thanks Mr.C. It seems to be sticking a bit better this time, or at least it feels that way. I am just starting my second year. Still lots of fieldwork to go and lots has been done already as I started my PhD project while still doing my MSc project. I am really excited for drilling this summer though and really hoping it all goes well.

To finish up the week, training wise.
Sunday: trainer (1hr) - I threw a few random intervals in to make this more interesting. 6 x 2 min. It was a pretty random choice of length and was more just to test out my legs a bit and make things more interesting. Next week I will have a little more structure and bring out the HR monitor.

Anyway, speaking of my PhD, I should probably get back to work on that now....

Week 2
Monday: Trainer (1hr) - 3 x 5 min intervals (160, 165, 165 bpm avg hr respectively). Things are a little confusing with the HR zones right now as I have not used the HR monitor in a while and not really trained for a long period of time so I think my limits have changed a bit. I think 165 was my aerobic threshold and it must still be close. While aerobically that HR was not difficult, it did feel harder on my legs. Before my intervals tonight I need to go back through my HR data for my early season from last year.

Wednesday: Trainer (45 min) - was feeling really tired and didn't have time to get on the trainer until after 9pm so only went for 45 minutes. Boooooring.

Thursday: xc ski (1 hr) - Fun ski at north campus. The snow conditions were absolutely terrible. Freezing rain earlier in the week left a hard crust on top. There are no groomed trails in this area, we always make our own, but it was definitely hilariously tough to ski as you would glide on top of the crust and then crunch down through it. Moving quickly kind of felt like moonwalking a bit and was a great workout on the ol' leg muscles. Eventually we had beat down some tracks in a loop and things were a bit faster/easier then.

Tonight I plan on hitting the trainer again for more intervals and a bit longer of a ride.

Thanks Linnea!

To finish up week 2
Saturday: Trainer (1.5 hr) -
5x5 min intervals, 5 min between except before the last where I waited 10. The second one was the worst and after that my body seemed to realize I wasn't going to stop doing this awful thing to it and provided me with some more energy.
Avg HR 137 overall, 170 max
Average speed with 0 km/hr :p
Interval avg/max HRs: 158/166, 160/167, 161/170, 162/168, 160/166

Sunday: Ski (1 hr) -
It was -28 celcius with windchill on Sunday but clear and sunny and beautiful. I love the way the pines and firs get all draped in snow in the winter. On the other hand, low temperatures = icy trails and had a few good wipeouts. Would have liked to be out a little longer but I was kind of worn out from the previous day's trainer ride and that combined with becoming a little on the wet side with all the falling into the snow had me a little cold by the end of the ski. Ah well, fun times with my usual ski buddies!

Looking at last year's log I can see that I was doing my 2 x 20s at an average HR of 167. That makes sense to me. I'm not planning on introducing those for a bit yet though. Need to work myself up to the 2 x 20s but I'm getting there. Supposed to warm up a bit this week so I'll hopefully get some more skiing in to compliment the trainer.

Oops, slid a bit. Got strep throat last week (seriously, when is it going to end? I've had enough of being sick!) so that really put a damper on the whole training thing. The week before that I rode and got a ski in but I can't remember the details now. Aside from being sick there has been much life craziness. Here is what my heart rate monitor says for saturday (01/29/2011):

Trainer - 75 min
5 x 2 (162/169, 165/173). HR getting up there a little more. I had limited time to ride so only did the 2 intervals.

I managed to squeeze another ride in after that Saturday before the sick took over, no data on that one though. Went to visit friends on the weekend where my only intervals were running up the steep toboggan hill repeatedly :) My legs were definitely sore after though.

Oh got some new shoes last weekend at a sale. They fit much better, the ones I have had forever were great shoes but were too wide (meant for man-feet I think) and my feet moved around too much.

Anyway, going to get back to the logging. Strep throat gone, feeling pretty healthy and I even did my first downward dog in ages where my sinuses didn't feel like they were about to explode with mucous. Whoopah!

Tuesday 08/01 - Trainer (45 min): I decided to ease myself back into training mode with a 45 min ride. Kept it fairly spinny but did a ramp up exercise that lasted about 15 minutes. Actually feeling pretty good again. Did some core exercises after I was done. New shoes feel good.

Life craziness should start to see some resolution by the end of the month. Hopefully.

Wednesday 10.02.2011 - Trainer (90 min) -
5 x5 min minute intervals
30 min warmup
interval 1 - 156/161
rest - 129/161
interval 2 - 159/166
rest - 129/166
interval 3 - 160/167
rest - 131/166
interval 4 - 160/166
rest - 132/165
interval 5 - 159/168
15 min cooldown

Was tired after not sleeping well for a couple days but felt good once I started and the intervals felt good.

Looks good, but is interval training really supposed to feel good? Shouldn't short ones like 4-5 minutes ideally be around 17-18 on the Borg scale? Not really a feelgood place to be

By feel good I mean not feeling sick and also good in a masochistic kind of way. I think I can uP the hr I do those intervals at though. I'm still figuring myself out after not training much for months and a lot of being sick.

Saturday 12-02-2011 : ski (45 min) and trainer (80 min) -
Went for a short ski this afternoon with a friend just getting back into skiing so it was slow but still fun.

Trainer I did a ramp up workout. I remember this being a good primer for getting into longer intervals last year. Would like to get to the 2 x 20 soon. I feel so behind in training this year. Anyway, the workout:
20 min warmup
20 min @ 154 bpm
15 min @ 162 bpm
10 min @ 172 bpm, was supposed to be 167 but I felt I could push harder so I did.
15 min cooldown

The 10 @ 172 were tough but I think I still don't have my hr zones nailed down well right now.

Argh I am feeling so clueless about training this winter.

I think fredrikw has his own special version of feeling good on intervals! Somehow when everything is going right and one is fit, really nailing it can feel good; unfortunately, that never seems to happen when yer unfit! :P

Looks like you are getting some good sessions in. Have you put together any sort of plan, even if informal?
