veganlisa trains for Tarawera

Postby veganlisa » Tue Sep 22, 2009 12:02 am

Well, I haven't committed to a marathon yet, but I have to start somewhere. So here's my first entry and first run in over 2 years (after becoming pregnant with my now 17-month-old daughter Maya). This will definitely be a challenge for me with raising Maya, working full-time and dealing with 2 previous knee surgeries. My first run felt good, though.

9/20/09: Ran 1 mile, walked a half
9/21/09: Rest day

I'll try another short run again tomorrow.

Great to see you starting a log.

A marathon is a great goal, but as I was discovering a year ago to this moment, it is quite a long way to run. With childcare and your knee injuries, I'd encourage you to aim for a 10k within 4 months, a HM next spring and then work your mileage up. Also, it will give you acheivements to keep you moving.

Then again, if you prove me wrong and storm straight into the marathon, I'm wrong!

Thanks guys! I'm actually thinking that the earliest that I'd try a marathon is next fall...definitely building up mileage slowly. Konstantin, I have this crazy idea in my head that anything less than a marathon is for people who run fast. In reality I know that's not true, but it's part of the reason why I don't want to run shorter races. I have this kind of all or none mentality.

Ran 1 mile and walked a half again. Tomorrow I'll rest.

Happy training all!!!

Thanks helmut! So far, so good. I'm even less sore today than after my first run. I'll do more of the same tomorrow and then increase a little on Saturday.

Well, I decided to run a little farther today to relieve a lot of work stress. I feel much better now.

Ran 2 miles, walked a half. I'll see how the muscles and joints feel tomorrow.

I think I'll plan to take one more rest day today. My right foot is a little sore. I need to get new shoes.

Ran 2 miles, walked a half. I'm still a little sore, but it seems to be getting better. I've also realized that my treadmill is not very accurate at all...needs to be re-calibrated. I know I'm running faster than the speed displayed on my treadmill. Hmm, guess that means my mileage is probably not accurate either.

Tonight's run did not go well. :( I had zero energy and felt like I had bricks strapped to my feet. I managed to run (very, very slowly) 2 miles, but felt like I was dying the whole time.

It happens sometimes. Just keep going and complete, rest, then have a better one next time.

Thanks Konstantin. I think I will be taking at least 2 more days off before running again. I'm pretty sore today. And now I'm freaking out thinking that my recently diagnosed vitamin D deficiency is making the aches and pains worse (probably not, but there goes my mind over exaggerating again).

Still resting and taking vitamin D and calcium supplements. I can't believe I let myself get a deficiency! Because I'm at high risk right now for stress fractures, I waiting until the soreness in my feet and knees is completely gone before running again. Ugh, I'm feeling so old right now...

Thanks emm. I feel like I should change the name of my training log to "Lisa's road to recovery" or something like that. My sister told me about a friend of hers who also was diagnosed with a severe vitamin D deficiency, got stress fractures from running, went on a mega dose of vitamin D, and then completed a triathlon 5 months later. That was encouraging.
