See that you're still keeping up the stats and setting PBs. Great job!

Long break from posting, much water under the bridge. Thought I might post on the humerous theories that I may continue to post, and that someone may find it interesting.

Incompetence by an unaccountable public body means the business where I worked has liquidated. I was prevented from working for months, and ineligible for any state benefits. Tried to get temporary work, there was none. Seriously shat on. Kept busy with training, reading, research and other stuff. Then the wife had an accident and I had to take over childcare. Timing sort of fitted in.

Prepared well for the HM, aiming for 1:30. Ran like mad, gave it all mentally and physically, took 3 mins of my Pb but was 22 secs outside the 1:30 mark. Can't grumble.

Started up my own business now and am working too many hours. It's not rare to work 8 am to 10 pm with about 1 1/2 hours in the middle. Loving it sometimes, climbing the walls sometimes. But it's getting there.

My training has suffered. Long runs are all but forgotten, but I am doing a bit of speedwork, and weight/bodyweight stuff is feeling right a lot. I might end up doing more of this for a while. I was considering an October marathon, but I think that's off for a while. I'm not sure how training will pan out, but I will need to do some, for so many reasons.

Wow, major life changes. Sorry to hear about the misfortunes. Glad to hear that you've been able to keep up some of your training. Congrats on the HM and good luck with your business! Do what you can with training, but get some rest too.

Thanks Lisa. I'm now aiming for about 40 miles a month, not 100, but am enjoying short bodyweight and weight sessions. After all that happened so far this year, training is not top of the list.

Fri
Weight session, mainly bicept curls, about 34 kg

Sat
30 mins sit ups, 551. Little bit of cycling.

Sun
10 mile run easy pace. It felt really hard and was my first 10 mile run for 4 weeks.

Slept badly - stiff back from the weights, abs sore form the sit ups and legs a bit stiff. Still, Monday is always a rest day.

Thanks GMS & Moggy. It's been a shit of a year. Business is tough and is has to work, the financial situation the incompetent shits have put me in leaves no option but to somehow force it to work. It's not going to be easy.

Training has changed, I'm doing short strength sessions at home mostly. Bicep curls on the Z bar, 20kg (x 120 reps) down to 36 kg (about 12 reps), chip ups, power overs, medicine ball presses. I did a deck of cards including chip ups (therefore I had 85 in there) recently, I'm stronger naturally than I am fast, so enjoying it. It's the 23rd of the month and I've run just twice this month. Which makes the next thing seem odd but..

....I'm thinking about doing another marathon. If I aim for one in the new year I can aim just to push out a long run at the weekend and one speed session during the week. As I'll do it in a VRUK vest, continued work on the arms will be important so I'll do a bit of that as well. Morg did OK recently training just once a week, and if I walk/run parts and get round in a crap time, well, so what?

Anyway, that's today's thoughts, tomorrow I may be laughing at them.

I hope none of the strength boys read your blog, but I am planning to run a half marathon in Feb next year. The fact you have done a marathon must help I think. Will be watching your log with interest.

No mention of sub 4 marathon?

Your log and avatar demostrate a sharp turn after Baldy Marathon 001 into the dark world of strength. You will be welcome back to running any time. That does sound interesting, I've always felt that muscle mass and strength can be helpful, although you will probly be carrying more weight higher up. Have you got a HM time yet? Any target? Will be dropping in on your log more often now.

I agree that my second will probly be helped by my first, although it was 2 years ago. That's why i'm thinking that just targetting the long run should be enough, last time I was a lot more organised.

I will probably have about 20kg more "mass" on me and it does make running harder. Plan is to go back to Cape Town on holiday and would be a crime to go home and not do a run on the mountain or a race with my best friend. Sub 2 hour half marathon would be target. I have done 1:51 half but my marathon split time was closer to 1:45.

In my mind because I have done a marathon and all that before, 10 weeks training and I can do anything endurance wise. Not sure what my pace would be, not as fast for sure.

This log is going to be vague for a while...

Wed
Weights and pull ups

Thurs
5 x 2:30 hill runs (road) off a 40 second (ish) rest.

Fri
A few power overs. Did high numbers in first few reps and the arms gave out.

Sat
Early 'HM' run, 13.39 hilly @ 9:27/mile. Much faster second half, enjoyed it. That's my longest run since 24th June - 3 months! I reckon I can get this fitness back on track.

Mon
10 x laps of the lake, an estimated 480 metres. Average 1:45 off a 60 second rest. Felt good, but got dark really quickly.

Tues
Nothing

Wed
Pack of cards, ace high (so 99 x each)
Chin ups
Z bar curls x 2 with 34kg.
Hindu Squat
V Up.

Took about an hour and was really hard on the arms.

Thurs & Fri

Nothing

Sat

Early runs are great! I miss my sleep in until late (7:30 would beb great!) and struggle to get up and go, but they feel so damn good.

I've got some advice from Morg. He ran a marathon a while back on 1 long run week with a speed/hiull session midweek. He's a big supporter of it because he feels rested and does each training run on full power. I'm beginning to think he's right.

Last week I did the longest run for 3 months. This morning I aimed to extend it, but also set my satnav to pace me at 9:30/mile instead of wandering at 10:00. That's not a bad pace for me as there's plenty of hills. Went off cold and dopey but felt good. Kept the pace, then at around 9 sped up and was clearly ahead of pace. Added a good extra bit on and finished strongly on a big hill, 16 and a bit at 9:08/mile.

Felt like I should get an entry for the marathon next week. Then thought more rationally. But 2 years ago I did runs like this ad they were hard. This wasn't so bad. I'm much stronger and should just get on with marathon 002. Training is now looking like:

Weekend: long run
Midweek: Speed session
Also midweek: Arms session - weights and b/w.

BTW Morg is entered for a marathon tomorrow but has hurt his back. He's not made a decision yet, but it looks unlikely that he'll run.

Mon
Rest day

Tues
20 x 100 m of a 30s rest.
10 x 200m off a 50s rest.
On road this time, the field is dark now. Feels damn good.

Wed
Nothing.

Thurs
Nothing again.

Fri
Hmm.

Sat
Up early. Same course as last week, 16.16 miles at 9:03/mile. It was windy but I was aiming for quicker and got it.
