I think you were smiling because you enjoyed the pain you were inflicting on yourself...that's hardcore running.

hilly three mile run round the village, a couple of long rather steep hills which are tough! About three miles or so, 32:30. (Will have to measure this route properly at some point!)

Feeling relaxed but very tired and looking forward to some pasta now.......

Will be coming up to a tough three weeks at work now, starting from tomorrow..... job situation precarious at the moment due to some bizarre and arcane matters to do with the budgets, comprehensible only to lawyers cut from a similar cloth to Al Pacino in "The Devil's Advocate"...... .... plus I have ten days to cut and complete code to elastoplast a category one fault on the system......

Have you tried this site? http://www.realbuzz.com/mapyourpassion/
Good for measuring distances IMO, just make sure you set the privacy settigns right or else your routes are public, which you might not want!

forgot to start my watch until a fair way into the run tonight! Club run.
Think it was about 1 and a half hours, probably about seven and a half miles or so?
It is really getting dark in the evenings now, is great to have a group to run with as it means you can enjoy running in the pitch black!
I do like running in the dark, there's something magical about it, don't know why, just feels quite liberating!

Glad to see you are enjoying your running so much!

I use an old dismantled railway track near where I live. It's great. When running there in the evenings I have seen foxes and (this year) badgers!

When I was on holiday in Scotland this summer, I did some runs along the loch and saw deer. I love that aspect of running!

Do you do interval training / speed work?

Excellent WCW! The wildlife where you run sounds fantastic!
Yes I get a lot of pleasure out of the running, it really lifts my spirits!

Am not doing intervals / speed work at the moment.....
think it would be good to figure out a session that would help me to get faster over the 6 - 8 miles distance and would also help me get ready for eg. half marathon.
Have got a vague goal in mind that I would like to do a half marathon!

What kind of interval / speed work would you recommend?

The one I started with is very simple and doesn't even require a timer.

Warm up by running 10-15 mins easy.
Sprint 10 paces (ie count each time your right leg makes contact with the ground). Jog 10 to recover.
Sprint 20, jog 20.
Sprint 30, jog 30.
Do this until you get to 100 (if you can't do that many, just stop at whatever number you can get to).
Then work back down the "pyramid" to 10.

The other really good one is 1 minute fast, 1 minute recover. See how many you can do - 10 reps would be cool.

It's fun!

Here's a quote from my running hero:

Why should I practice running slow? I already know how to run slow. I want to learn to run fast. Everyone said, 'Emil, you are a fool!' But when I first won the European Championship, they said: 'Emil, you are a genius!'"

tried the "pyramid" tonight!
3 1/2 miles in 35 mins including warm up jog, cool down jog and full Pyramid from 10 to 100 and back again!
It was tough but I really enjoyed it too :D :D :D
Tried to run as fast as possible during the running parts of the pyramid, felt like I was flying along, very nice feeling :D :D (bet I was not going all that fast really though it just felt like it!)

cheers WCW I think it's a workout I will definitely repeat, it is challenging for me but it also is possible to complete it within a reasonable space of time and distance so I really did like it a lot! Also I like the convenience of being able to count the paces!
