Suspicions confirmed... went to bed Monday night with a sore throat & wooziness, and have been pretty munted all week with a cough and some pretty spectacular wisdom tooth pain! Skipped today's session (Fri) and will try for Sat/Sun.

Managed an easy(ish) 2h run out Weds, but had three near-misses within half a KM of leaving home, a driver who ran a stop sign, then two peds stepping into the road without looking. I came within 30s of my PB up the other side of Igeldo without really pushing which cheered me up a bit.

oh and found another couple of pics. First 'subida' of Jaizkibel when it was still fun, then a few hours later coming back the other way. The yin and the yang.

Not a lot of respite in that profile. Ouch!

Ha ha! Nice pics Bob! Man I so relate to those pic's. Thats the funny thing about cycling aye?! You can feel totally on fire for a few hrs. It's fun, exhilirating and then...holy shit just turning the pedals hurts! It's an unforgiving sport...but thats what I like about it (as long as I don't crash). :)

Hope you get that w.teeth pain sorted. Nothing worse than toothache :(

Just looking at the HR data for that ride & on the headwind bit where I was doing all the donkey work, I was sat at 165 avg for 30 mins, so the blow-up on the last climb was a foregone conclusion really! Oh well, you live & don't learn :)

Sat 20/4
Leitza loop
100km

By afternoon I felt well enough to go out for an easy loop but after 3hrs I was pretty fed up. On the climbs the HR was way up for little perceived effort. Missed out on a PB by one second (over 4 mins!).

Sun 21/4
Club Run Basa Kabi via Goizueta. Plus Uitzi solo.
122km 1700m 4h32

Not a bad day out, I was pretty congested but didn't feel quite as rotten. Slow start with the guys, after the sign on we had a smaller group go on up to Basa Kabi, felt good enough to stretch the legs a bit up there, then after Leitza everyone headed for home. I decided to do a last climb, up to Uitzi, and got a PB at least even though the surface has been torn up by the machine that shaves the top layer off, and not yet replaced. It was pretty uncomfortable!
It's a loooong downhill from there, but the HW didn't let me have it so easy. As Saturday, faded in the last half hour and wished I hadn't added the last 20km. Caught a guy also suffering so we kept up a reasonable survival pace together.

Haha! I'm sure they appreciated your efforts at the finish :)

Oooo...nearly baby time eh? Do you know the date or is it being left to nature? Can't remember the statistic but its something like only 5% of babies are born on their due date. Which means you're more than likely to be able to finish your race on the 28th without getting a frantic call halfway through! :P  Just joking
All the best for you and your partner anyway :)

Well in the end I got the mother of all fevers on Friday night, it had me worried I wouldn't see morning so I called the doc out for the first time in my life. I internet-diagnosed myself as having pneumonia which the doc thought hilarious. Just a fever and chest infection, probably from the cold I didn't really rest out a week or two ago.
Anyway, course of antibiotics and I'm feeling better but got a real kicking from it. Explains why I've felt pretty off for a while at least.
And writing this from the hospital waiting room, not sure if they'll admit us or send us home to wait a bit longer, but one thing's clear - th bike will be sitting on flat tyres in the spare room for a while yet ;-)

Internet diagnosing is the only way to go, I always end up with something deadly then sleep for a night and feel a lot better. Sucks to be on antibiotics but at least it wasn't pneumonia :)

Thanks guys, all went smoothly and mother and baby doing well. Thankfully I got over the fever well enough to be there, would have been gutted to miss it. He was sin nombre for a while but we finally settled on Niko.

thanks all :) With the eating-shitting-screaming machine we've had delivered, there hasn't been much time to come on here!

Well I thought I'd dip a toe back in the water today, after about a month off the bike. God it was horrible!

Fri 17/5
Goizueta OnB
70km sl-o-o-o-w

Amazing how much damage a month off does. Not just physically; looking out at the rain it took me about two hours to get motivated. Legs & lungs have shrunk, couldn't get going, wasn't comfortable, traffic seemed ultra scary, though I did feel a bit better into the 2nd hour. Going to be a slow journey back, moreso with the limited time I have now!
ANd the spring?! This time last year I was getting burnt alive in 35º sun, and this year it's hardly stopped raining, and there's snow about 400m!
