Where are you from? Where are you now?

Postby loveliberate » Fri Dec 14, 2012 6:47 pm

So I was pondering it and from what folks here have shared, it seems like the bulk of VFers who have relocated to another country are originally from either the UK, Germany, Austria, Finland or Sweden. Interestiny, igt also seems like most of you who've moved to another country also ended up in one of those same five countries.

Thoughts on why this is? Where are you from? If you could relocate to any country, which would you choose and why?

I´m from The Netherlands moved to Spain.

Why ?

I like my home town Amsterdam, but felt like some change.

Where more options at a time, but wanted an English or Spanish speaking country. Because of my lausy language skills.

My idea was to give my spanish a boost and than go somewhere else, but I did not left.

For the moment I´ll stay and work on Vegania (vegan restaurant and stores).

I've lived in the UK now for 3.5 years, but prior to that I lived my whole life in Australia.

Moved because life events conspired to give me the opportunity to live and work on the other side of the world, and it was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made.

What has made it such a good decision for you? What part/s of Aus had you called home?

finland -> england -> berlin

moving around in europe within EU is not such a big deal, though a bigger thing than just moving states in US because of the different languages and cultures.

but that makes moving even more interesting i think :) its scary at first, and adapting is really hard. I struggle a lot at the moment especially with learning german, but i enjoy the challenge.

Talyn,
I am curious about how travel is easier in the UK? Is it just that the UK isn't as geographically isolated as Australia - or are you referring to the internal transportation options inside the UK?

JP,
It's very cool that folks can move around the EU fairly easily and wonderful that there are so many different cultures intertwined there. I very much hope to visit some day!

I was born in the US but New Zealand has become home, and I've spent some years in Switzerland as well. So I've missed all of your big 5 countries. 8)

French and Australian via parents, born and raised in Luxembourg, moved to the UK for university and never got out. Not sure where that makes me from, or where it implies I belong.

Plan is to get away by the end of summer 2013, no idea where to yet though... depends where I can get a job!

Thanks for the replies. Neat to see folks moving around so much. Mr. C - I am jealous! I'd love to hear more about your time in NZ & CH, both are places I's very much like to visit! :)

Im from North Wales and I live in North Wales, because I love it here.

I mean I really do love it. I love that the mountains are on my doorstep and so familiar and relatively small. I love that there are so many lakes within walking distance. I love the trees and the mosses and the sounds in the woods. I love the river's rise and fall. I love that folk in my town smile and say hello even if they dont know you. I love that its rude not to smile and say hello to folk on the street even if you dont know them. I love that we have enough rain to make sunny days feel special and enough sun to make the whole area green and enough cold to make a wood burning stove a necessity. And I love that there's now lots of places to buy vegan food and enough special folk to share it with. And I love the legends and fairy tales and the history of my particular town.

So even though I realise there are lots of wonderful places on the earth, for now Im glad to just visit and come back to the place Im lucky enough to love and live in. and of course welcome visitors from all over to share it too :D
