Getting too used to the good vegan life

Postby JP » Wed Dec 12, 2012 4:40 pm

I caught myself complaining the other day about food choices where i live...

what an asshole :D

within 10 minute walk there are about 40 places to get falafel from, including sudanese peanut butter sauce one, about same amount of meat places with tofu dishes (pretty much every ethnic food you can think of), 3 fully vegan and some very vegan focused food places (burger joints, vegan kebab place, french joint, then non vegan but very vegan friendly pizzeria, hot dog place... could go on!)

and thats just 10 minute walk radius, tons more choice with a bit of transport.

But why cant every place be vegan :D

WHY!!!!

gone are the days when there was no soya milk and i drank soya bean flour mixed with water and didnt complain :D

Man, you are living in the vegan paradise that is Berlin yet you're still complaining. Some people just cannot be pleased.

I don't think people in the USA and most of Europe realise how good they've got it when it comes to vegan products. I mean you can walk into any big grocery store in the USA and buy a tub of rice protein powder and some clif bars. In Australia they're still seen as some weird and exotic specialty item for hippy health food shops where they charge $60 for 500g of shitty soy protein.

JP, you definitely need to HTFU! :D I'm grateful for the same five restaurants I always go to, some of which only have one vegan option. We did just get a new all-vegan place, so that should be handy.

forget about that, i wont be happy until its ALL VEGAN :D

but no, it is amazing, and i dont feel quilty about it at all that i can enjoy this now, i have gone through the shitty times 21-22 years ago now its my turn to enjoy the fruits of other vegan activists labour :D

Spoke with a dude at a local pizzy place, its a meat serving restaurant, fairly typical late night (open till 5am) type of pizza/falafel etc place, kurdish run. They also have a vegan menu, and big VEGAN PIZZA signs outside (the owner recently went vegan which explains why they promote it), and the pizza maker said some days they sell more vegan pizzas than dairy/meat pizzas. Thats amazing because its not a vegan only place and on one of the main streets in the area!

One explanation could be that the pizzas they sell are awesome, tuna, salami, ham etc etc, its all there, with proper nice cheese.

Just goes to show how many vegans live in the area, most days i will see someone with a vegan or animal rights shirt/patch/button/bag walking around.

Sounds a lot like a bigger city version of Portland - with more falafel! :D Same things here: some non-vegan places advertise their vegan options more than their other stuff & if you're out chances are that you'll encounter other vegans. We even have a regular vegan columnist in the newspapers food section! :)

 I'm just teasing you. I totally understand looking back at how things used to be and how much better it is now. When I first went vegan, I pretty much could only go out to eat at Asian restaurants, and now there's definitely a lot more going on. Clif bars have always been around at every grocery store and gas station. I still think it's funny how much all the Europeans on this forum talk about how they wish they could get Clif bars. On the flip side, I have never seen a vegan mince pie!
