New site showcasing Vegan Athletes

Postby Konstantin » Sat Jan 14, 2012 4:52 pm

The Vegan Athletes list on VF has been getting bigger and more interesting over the last few years, and we felt it should get more access to people outside VF.

So, a few of us have been working on http://www.greatveganathletes.com. It's still in progress and there's more to do, but already it's shaping up. The line/para breaks are coming soon, as is a news section. I'm also tidying up some of the links and summary paragraphs. Baldy's a bit of a wizard with the computer programming and we've already got a lot of research done already from the VF list.

Feedback and suggestions are appreciated, we foresee this as being an impressive site within a few months and want to keep it up to date, interesting and continually improving.

This is really cool. Nice site. Seeing some athletes not on the thread too.

Well done :)
Although the effeminate nature of my username may suggest otherwise, my gender actually falls into the male category.

Good site layout and solid articles on the athletes. You tell Baldy he had better be coding the site in HTML5 or I'm gonna give him a swift kick in the arse :D

Thanks everyone. Negative comments appreciated too, we'll take all possible steps to make it better.

Can you hold off for a bit, it would be nice to get a couple of issues resolved first, which should only take a week or two.

That was one of the main motivations for going stand-alone. A lot of them have interesting stories and/or impressive histories we couldn't do in a small space.

You tell Baldy he had better be coding the site in HTML5 or I'm gonna give him a swift kick in the arse :D

Sorry, don't have a clue what you mean. But Baldy's on the case in that respect (I think).

It's all in drupal, so the framework is solid and we are only tweaking the modules and themes. Do you have HTML skills? We will probably need some help in the near future tweaking themes and CSS.

To add to what Konstantin has already said, this is a side project and we envisage it being combined with VF in the near future. It is also a great chance to get other people involved with the development.
So if you are keen to help and have sysadmin, graphics, html, css, drupal or writing skills please shout! The thread on vegan athletes will continue to be a major source of information to the site and without it the site wouldn't even exist, so please continue to post to it.

The best way to help us on the site is to draft an article. Say for example your a MMA fan and Mac Danzig has a fight, just write up a rough review of the fight and send it to us. We will then proof read it and make it a news article on the site. That is how we can take this site to the next level.

We are working on having the same functionality on VF, so stay tuned and get involved if you can.

Looks good, well done. I first saw it linked on FB, and thought "WTF someone stole Konstantins list"

Personally I'd prefer to have a somewhat more stricter criterium for who's on a list like this, I think they should at least be competing and performing at a national level IMO. VF is full of local heroes, and although of course being important as well, the standards should be a bit higher on a list like this.

Looks good even if you appear to have forgotten to put me on it :-)

Maybe needs a prominent "contact us" button - not doubting the exhaustiveness of your research but if I'm a successful vegan athlete (or know someone who is), how do I get it added to the list?

I think I'll fwd the link to a certain American professional time trialler who, since "Salmongate", has gone very quiet on the vegan front... are you in this or not?
