Pizza

Postby Catt Queen » Sun Jun 24, 2012 3:41 pm

I've just returned from my annual(ish) visit to Asda to get pizza (from the deli counter, only place around here that I can get a vegan pizza). While I was waiting at the checkout, I got chatting to the lady in front of me and she said that one of the big pizza chains will make pizza with vegan cheese. She wasn't sure which one, suggested maybe Pizza Express but I can't see anyone on their site about it... does anyone know if this is actually true or not?

I think so :) .. I did some heavy research at my in laws house and you can get a vegan pizza made to order & delivered at dominos (shock horror). Check their site, they have a list of all the ingredients and sauces etc - but you I think you need the thin base, some tomato / garlic sauce and then some toppings like onion, mushroom and sweetcorn.

Yes, it's Pizza Express, but you have to take the cheese in yourself, they don't provide it.

Here in the US any pizza chain will honor a request ( not reduce the price ) to leave the cheese off of a pizza. If you load up on toppings the result is something very pleasant( and a lot lower in calories and fat ), you get something like a focaccia or what an Italian pizza used to be like before migrating out of Italy.

In the US I found that Papa Johns loads you up with the veggies on a cheeseless pizza. The one time I had to order Dominos it was essentially cardboard with a bit of tomato sauce and a mushroom or two. Yuck.

With both PJ's and Dominos it's luck of the draw what quality you get... and having been a manager in both, I have to say, the general standards are higher at PJs and the general mentality is better too. Of course it will still vary from store to store (franchise to franchise), but there's no three second rule at PJs...

Never heard of one, but it would be awesome! There was talk about pizza express making one when they did that competition, but the vegan option didn't win.

Veneziana without the cheese for the win at Pizza express. Dominos is edible, but always seem to end up with millions bits of sweetcorn, which seems wrong on a pizza.

Not sure if they still make it, but at Pizza Express the Putanesca is also vegan if you order it without anchovy. I usually get the extra chargrilled vegetables, it's pretty good.

Speaking of pizza, Redwoods are now doing mini sized pizzas with their usual cheeses/fake meats - they have them at Holland & Barrett but they looka bit minging to be honest.
Meat is still murder, dairy is still rape.

There is a pizza chain in the states, and 8 locations in Saudi Arabia :?: , called Pizza Fusion that does vegan pizza, with cheese. I don't like soy cheese though, so wasn't impressed. Was also pretty expensive, but it's all franchises so prices vary and the one I'd gone too was in a touristy part of town where prices are always ridiculous.

We have a little pizza place called Fong's. It used to be a Chinese restaurant, and now it's a Chinese pizza restaurant. Yeah, you heard me right. It's been around for a couple of years in an area of downtown Des Moines where there are lots of bars and clubs and is open until 4am or something like that, so I guess it operates on the idea that drunk people will think that combining pizza and Chinese food is a good idea. I've still never been there...because...well, it sounds disgusting. But rumor has it they have some sort of vegan cheese and they do a lot of made to order pizzas. So if any of you want to visit Iowa for some weird reason.....Here's the menu: http://fongspizza.com/menu/food

Actually, it looks like you can do more of a traditional make your own pizza with daiya cheese. So I guess it's not necessarily a fusion of Chinese and pizza toppings on one pizza.

They do here in Britain, too. It's best not to get pizza from a chain, though. Proper Italian restaurants are better.
