help construct the VF FAQ!

Postby Lordmuppet » Tue May 15, 2012 8:24 am

Hi folks,

So I'm putting together an FAQ for the site. The best way for me to do this is for me to act primarily as compiler and editor rather than writer and compile/edit suggestions from you!

So if you have a question and/or answer that you would like included please either post it here or PM me with it.

Also if you know of a thread here which contains important info that should be distilled into the FAQ please link to it

PMs are fine but I would prefer for people to post here as then the collaboration between us all is easier. e.g. Jack posts a question without an answer and Jill responds with either an answer or a link to a thread that answered that question.

Okay let's go! :D

help construct the VF FAQ!

Postby Talyn » Tue May 15, 2012 8:49 am

Good idea.

I am happy to assist you with editing if it helps.

In light of recent threads, I'd like there to be a nutrition/calorie intake type FAQ.

I'll have a think about it and draft something in the next few days.

thanks I may take you up on that.

The nutritional basics video that we already have stickied I plan to move into the FAQ

edited to add: but we could use more nutritional stuff obviously

[*] I have x wrong with me how do I cure it?
[*] Since going vegan I am putting on weight, what am I doing wrong?
[*] Since going vegan I have lost weight, what am I doing wrong?
[*] You guys talk about disco, lemony, crack and duct tape what are you on about?
[*] Is honey vegan?
[*] What do vegan athletes eat? Sample meal plans.
[*] How do I bulk up?
[*] How do I cut? I would like to be really lean.
[*] Do I need to take b12

The big question is what workout are we going to recommend for beginners?
My vote goes for 5x5 strong lifts style, but sure there will be some Mad Cow, 5/3/1 and Starting Strength advocates.

With all the training related questions I think we need to be clear about setting quantifiable realistic goals. Like get down to 10% bodyfat rather than get a 6 pack.
Run 10km in under an hour rather than "get fit". Push people to start training logs for motivation!

I vote for Starting Strength over Stronglift 5x5 as the extra 2 sets do nothing for beginners. Happy to include MadCow. 5/3/1 is an intermediate program no?

Are there good weblinks for starting strength? Strong lifts is all available easily on the web, but he has some crazy dieting articles. So if we can avoid sending him traffic maybe better.
Stronglifts did just steal the program, so we could do the same?

yep there's plenty of good weblinks for starting strength. I'll take care of it :)

whole website here where Rippetoe comments regularly http://startingstrength.com/index.php/site

he also has articles on T-nation that describe the basics of SS and also Texas Method

edited to add: Stronglifts is still good for basic but thorough descriptions of the main lifts though

Never buy or sell anything on the internet. Also never speak to people or meet persons off the internet.
Keep it safe!

I had some ideas for the FAQ:

eg.. I want to:
know more about what food vegans eat
know more about vegan clothing
know more about animal rights & welfare charities in my area
know more about good vegan protein sources
know more about vegan retailers (online)
know more about vegan restaurants, cafes and eateries in my area
know more about alcoholic vegan drinks
know more about local shops that have vegan options
see some examples of vegan athletes
learn about some important nutritional requirements as a vegan
learn more about vitamins & minerals
I have a specific vegan related question
gain muscle mass
lose fat
improve my cardiovascular fitness
increase my strength
find out about vegan events happening now/soon
organise a vegan event
find out more about VFW Italy 2012
get good vegan recipes
provide some feedback about the website
provide some feedback about the forum
provide an article to be published on the website
give a suggestion for a new FAQ
give a suggestion for an addition to the vegan athletes list
be featured on the main website
upload a picture to be added to the gallery

Good move, I've said before that VeganFitness ought to be a web site with a forum, not just a forum.
Nice to see someone making up for my inaction by doing it.

I like Baldy's comment about quantifiable goals. Too many people focus on weight loss (or fat loss) as a goal in its self, when it should be about getting stronger or faster.

A guide to nutritional requirements would be good.
How much protein, calories, carbohydrates, calcium, etc. do I need and where do I get it ?
