Double Ironman UK - Next Week! 07/08

Postby skoptic » Fri Jul 30, 2010 8:24 am

So it's 1 week till my double ironman (enduroman) - starts next Sat (7th August) and I should be finished sometime on Sunday. Actually I'm in the last wave of 3 and I start my swim at 2pm or something ... so I reckon I'll be done by 6pm-ish on Sunday (or hope to be!).

So it's 5 mile swim, 225 mile bike & 52 mile run - there is a 35 hour cutoff so it's a continuous event, rather than the ultraman which is split over 3 days. I'm planning to beat a time a club mate did 2 years ago (27.50) - it's a bit arbitrary .... but good to have some goal to focus on.

The main issues will be cycling ALL through the night (I think I'll be cycling from 6pm to 9am) and then tackling the double marathon. I've done the 52 miles before in ultras, so I feel confident, but with a race like this - you just can't tell until you're there and have already swum 5 and cycled 225! I'm very prone to cramp too so we'll have to see how that goes as well....

I'm very lucky to have supportive parents & fiancee who'll be writing off their weekend to stand around in the dark and try to make me eat food. It's a 'thankless' task (I do thank them ... obviously) .. but without a decent crew, these events are a lot tougher. If anyone is interested - I'll try to get Mrs skoptic to update this thread at some point during the race :-)

I'll be wearing my vegan cyclist top and vegan runners top for as much of the race as possible ... whoop!

Roll on next week....

Good luck. Is there a limit on how much caffeine you can consume while competing in these types of events? :)

incredible. can;t wait to hear the updates and how you do. i can;t imagine doing 1/4 of any of the 3 legs just by themselves, let alone doing it all -- unless i had 2 months to complete it. mad props to you you crazy SOB!! ;)

show'em how it's done!!

one question, how many people generally participate in an event like this?

Thanks guys - I think it takes the same tenacity and stubborness to be a vegan and an endurance athlete... you're all mad too ;-)

So yeah cutoff if 36 but if I'm anywhere near that I'll be very unhappy (and very tired!) .. So there are 72 people (entry limit) ... I think the logistics of many more might be too much. Just did my last taper 60 mile bike ... felt like a short ride round to the shops after some of my training rides!

Thanks for the all the encouragement ... lets get plant strong and nail this!! :-)

I agree you're totally crazy, but also rather jealous of your endurance!

Best of luck mate. For the animals!
