Unable to do sit ups!

Postby Ombah » Tue Mar 23, 2010 11:45 am

I can't do sit ups. I don't really know why, cause my abs should be enough to handle it. I just can't get up. I really want to be able to do it (don't want to be seen as weak, haha). What should I do about it?

lots of folks say doing traditional sit-ups aren;t really good for you anyway. have you looked into doing reverse crunches or hanging crunches? i think hanging crunches do more for you than traditional sit-ups and you don;t risk hurting your back.

here's some info on reverse crunches.

Crunches & sit ups suck according to every physio/osteopath I've ever spoken to.

Do planks, bridges & roll outs. Much better for the spine.

Define "can't do it". What types are you trying to do? Is your neck hurting?

Try these kinds:

1) Lie on your back with your arms at your sides and raise your legs in the air. Bend your knees and while keeping them in the air, straighten them out. Do NOT put your hips or legs into this; work strictly with your gut muscles.

2) Lie on your back, one hand behind your head, legs in the air and crossed at the ankle, and reach for the opposite foot with your hand. Again, focus on the gut and keep your gaze on the ceiling--that'll help your neck. Then switch hands/ankles crossed.

3) Boat pose in yoga. Balance yourself on your sitting bones, and raise your legs in the air, shins parallel to the floor. If this is good, then hold your arms out in line with your legs. You should definitely feel this in your abs, and if you can take it further, raise both legs and arms.

I simply don't get up! My girlfriend (who can't do push-ups, haha) has tried to teach me and she don't understand what's the problem. When my head gets up about 20 cm my legs gets up too if I try to push further. But the reversed worked out just fine.

Aha, I think I know why. Your lower back is probably not flexible enough. I you sit on the floor with straight legs, can you touch your toes?

The 'bicycle' is a good ab-killer.

Start in the sit-up position with your hands touching your temples and elbows out. Bring up your left knee and sit up with a twist so's to touch your knee with your right elbow. Return to the start position and do the same with the other side. It engages all your abs.

The side plank is one of my favourites too.

it would be interesting to know that for how long you have been working out. If you have just started doing these exercises than its fine because in the beginning almost every one has to face these problems (I had the same problem in the beginning but now its fine). Also try doing some lower back exercises as well because they will help you in strengthening your core and make these exercises much easier to perform.
