kettlebells!

Postby Rochellita » Tue Mar 11, 2008 9:32 pm

Aside from the obvious (mike mahler) does anyone else here use kettlebells regularly? I've started training with them and they are great fun. I'm looking out for a workshop to learn better technique for the more complex stuff like the various cleans and snatches but the courses tend to only be available for qualified personal trainers.

I've chatted to these guys and they seems pretty sound. Decent training courses don't come particularly cheap though :(

have you bought any kettlebell instructional DVD's or books. i started using a KB a while back and i was able to teach myself KB cleans and KB snatches. everyone's learning curve is different thought. there are plenty of free instructional videos online. they are fun, however i stopped using KB because the heavy ones are expensive.

i like kettlebells and have tried to use them, but they just don't have a place in my routine. i actually prefer to do one-arm dumbbell snatches to kettlebell snatches. that about sums it up.
Are you doing enough to be the best?

Thanks for the replies. No, I don't have any DVD's or books, and have just been teaching myself from videos and info off the web really.

UW- I saw that website but they only seem to train fitness profs, maybe because of health and safety issues? Does your gym offer kettlebells to the public? They seem to be appearing in gyms, and many PT's and gym instructors don't seem to be very informed about their use as yet.

I own this DVD. Maher's Aggressive Strength: Kettlebell Solution for Size and Strength. I think it's appropriate for a beginner.

Hey, Mike I want a percentage.

i used to use them a lot but now only use them maybe once a week.fitting them in between martial arts training and high volume weight training at home. Trying to find the right balance between the barbell/dumbbells and the kettles.

i like TGU,shoulder press,swings,windmills,squats,lunges.

i have a 12 kg and a 16 kg but only use the 16kg. bought them about 2 year agon and cannot afford to upgrade to gettign two 24s! :(

They do say "This is the starting point for any personal trainer, strength & conditioning coach, rehabilitation specialist or fitness enthusiast." so I assumed you don't need a qualification, but it may be more then you need if you just want an introduction to using them.

To answer your question, dear God no. I dread to think what would happen if we let kettlebells loose on the chumps in our gym  although it would be nice to have access to some for PT sessions.

By the way if you're looking for a DVD I rate Pavel Tsatsouline's stuff pretty highly.

I've just started using kettlebells and love it. Mike Mahler's material is great and there are some good youtube clips out there as well.

Since I'm hoping to move into being a PT this year I'm going to pick up a qualification in kettlebells for using in PT sessions with clients.

 I think the people in my gym are mostly too scared to touch them.

I watched Pavel Tsatsouline's 'Enter the Kettlebell' last night, hilarious and informative. Comrade :) Will definitely get some more of his stuff.

I was introduced to Kettlebells last May and haven't looked back. I'm not a traditional bodybuilder but love working with them because there is so much variety and I've lost weight so quickly.

I've not used the videos as have been working with an RKC trainer. He's pretty strict about technique so I'm constantly working to improve this which keeps my brain busy whilst I'm working out. Traditional gym routines don't do this. My favourites are Turkish Get Ups and Snatches. Have recently learnt two bell swings and Windmills. Am working towards 2 kettlebell snatches at the moment.

Are there any other women working with Kettlebells out there?

Yep....I get some real strange looks when I'm uisng the Kettlebells at the gym, particularly if I am using the joint mobility excercises too. One of the trainers actually came up to ask me what I was doing the other day.

Have now bought some to use at home away from the strange looks. There's a piece in one of Pavel's books about naming your kettlebells so I've decided to name my little 8kgs after Huey and Dewey from "Silent Running" Lol

I was introduced to Kettlebells last year and they are great. I use them 4-5 times a week usually, typically between 30-40 minutes. I have gotten to watch my shoulders/arms increase in strength and a little size, and also my endurance with snatches has made excellent progress from 100 swings in >10 minutes to under 4 currently. It's one of the best work out tools I've ever found, and so compact. It's easy to take on the road with you or on vacation. Check out some of the Pavel stuff - his videos are awesome.
