Body fat percentage

Okay, so I had my body fat taken today, and apparently it is 23.6 FMI.

What does that mean? (the guy at the gym thought it was okay). And what about my weight gain over the last month. I started out 69 kg. Now I am (wait for it) 81 kg! (Some of it is water retention from my period, but that is routinely 5 kg.)

That's great gains. How did they measure you BF, by the way?
23.6% is considered a "fit" level of fat, but not "athletic"*, which on women is 12-22% (depending), so that's great going & some gains in mass in one month!!!

*To make that clearer you'd be considered a fit person having that % of fat, but not down to the levels of an athlete.

It was a hand held electronic current thing.

I want to get athletic! Karate is coming back soon (been off for two weeks. :( ) Looking forward to leaping around kicking people again. :lol:

Looks like it was only 1kg water retention this month, so in fact I am up to 80kg.

You get various results with those electronic measuring devices depending on how hydrated you are, they aren't reliable.
I've got 2 foolproof methods of checking body fat.

1/ Get some calipers, take measurements. Don't worry about any of the fancy formulas etc to calculate fat %, just remember exactly how you measured yourself. Four weeks later do the same.
Now, have you got fatter, leaner or stayed the same. You may not know your fat % exactly, but you can really tell accurately if you're gaining fat or losing, it's a great method for checking on fat fluctuations.

2/ Not as accurate, but...Get a camera. Take a picture. Do the same in 4 weeks.
This wont tell you much about fat %, but it will show you "apparent" fat levels, are you looking leaner. Take the picture at about the same time in the same place (so the lighting etc is the same).

The only accurate method of measuring fat % is autopsy :!: So, I wouldn't worry too much about knowing your exact % by any measuring system, just go by how you look & whether you are gaining, static or losing fat.

Well, it looks like I am losing fat, because I am thinner around the waist. And I realised a couple of days ago that my arms are thicker around the bicep than they were - I actually have a bulge there again, which is nice. :) Though I am a bit nervous about measuring them after only four weeks, as it might be a bit discouraging if I turn out to have gained nought.

Do they think you have more fat when you are retaining water then? I bet female anatomy confuses it no end...
