Goteborg/Oslo/Helsinki/Stockholm/Copenhagen dining options?

Postby RiseAgainst » Wed Jun 27, 2012 4:24 am

Yes, that is quite a few cities but I didn't want to do a post for each. I've looked over this forum and others as well as HappyCow so I have a pretty decent idea but looking for any locals or updated advice on restaurants and grocery stores. Lots of places I have found from old post appear to be closed now too.

We are doing a driving tour of the area the end of July/first of August. We will only be in each city a few days each so looking for "must eats". We plan on packing lunch/dinner for things like train day trips and overnight ferries so we know we have something to eat so a good grocery with lots of vegan options in Oslo and Helsinki would be great.

We are also headed to the Jyvaskyla area for one night too, Berlin as well but I have a list of so many places in Berlin already I think we are set.

Really looking forward to the trip and from what I have found it doesn't look like we will starve (the language change in each country might be more difficult).

Thanks all!

dude no problem, sweden and finland are pretty damn good for vegans!

helsinki please check out new vegan restaurant veganissimo in sörnäinen, when legendary vegan fitness week cook Pimmando K is working, the food is guaranteed to be awesome ;)

in jyväskylä i would immediately head out to http://www.sohwi.fi its a meat place but offers a really nice seitan steak vegan meal, which you can enjoy in hopefully sunny terrace.

in finland check out plenty of vegan ice creams etc in the supermarkets. Soya milks and vegan yoghurts are more plentiful than in any other country i know.

And welcome to berlin too, its good for vegans, but will you know the *right* places to go to ;)

Thanks JP! I stole some of your spots from another post you had replied to on Berlin so double-thanks! Berlin is kind of a side thought but I think we are just wanting to check it out to confirm we want to come back and spend even more time.

if the radical politics interest you (judging from your username!) then definitely give those autonomous centres peoples kitchens a go!

here is a listing of each days kitchens, most are vegan, even if not labelled as such:

Sweden will be no problem, all the super markets have soya products. In Gothenburg check out Old Corner for vegan pizza.

Göteborg: Old Corner was already mentioned but Grillköket Jonsborg (Kungsportsavenyn 39) is a good place for vegan versions of swedish fast food!

Stockholm: Tevere-pizzeria has good pizzas with soy cheese and mock meats. Lao Wai (http://laowai.se/) is amazing, though you probably need a reservation. Malaysia (http://www.restaurangmalaysia.se/) on the same street as Lao Wai is good also. Kokyo (http://www.kokyo.se/) is good also.

Helsinki: Silvoplee is good (http://www.silvoplee.com/) but a little bit hippy. Habibi (http://www.habibi.fi/) and Fafa's (http://eat.fi/en/helsinki/fafas) in the city centre have good falafels. Farang (http://farang.fi/) has an excellent vegan tasting menu but it costs 55 euros. For a vegan soy bolognese pizza and an authentic finnish bar atmosphere you can go to Salpimienta (http://eat.fi/helsinki/ravintola-salpimienta).

Some good thai restaurants are Thai Orchid (http://www.thaimaalainenravintola.fi/), Lemon Grass (http://eat.fi/helsinki/lemon-grass) and Tuktuk (http://eat.fi/helsinki/tuk-tuk). A malaysian place favored by local vegans is New Bamboo Center (http://www.newbamboocenter.com/), the most popular dishes there seem to be currytofu, sataytofu and kung po tofu.

[edit: oh yeah Ekolo organic grocery store (http://www.ekolo.fi/) has vegan meat doughnuts and doughnuts]

Tevere in Stockholm has closed, but been replaced by a much more awesome place called O Mamma Mia (http://www.facebook.com/OMammaMiaPizzaO ... eganpizzor), not a fully vegan place but they have in a very short period of time really taken up an interest in vegan food, and keep on bringing new stuff to their menu all the time, really seeing the potential in catering for vegans. Super nice and friendly staff as well, last week they had a facebook competition among their followers, six people were chosen at random for a vegan dinner together.

Someone told me Grillköket Jonsborg in Goteborg has closed. What a shame. I loved that place.

It was just closed during winter to build a new house, re-opened about a month ago :)

In Gothenburg there is also Kellys, they now have a fantastic kebab that was sampled with great enthusiasm this Saturday by a couple of (mostly inactive) VF folks :)
