I fell in love with the place and would probably still be there if my partner spoke German.

There's a good Kumpir (Turkish baked potato, better than it sounds) place near Sternschanze. There's a good restaurant called Oma's Apotheke near there, too.

At the top of Europa Passage (shopping centre in the city centre) there's a pretty amazing ice cream place. I think most of the fruit ones were vegan... try the ice cream spaghetti! There's a good two-for-one coffee shop behind Europa Passage and near the main station, but it's always heaving. There's a good vintage clothes shop next door... Oh, there's a bar called ALEX that does food by the lake by the Rathaus (you can't miss it). There's a nice sushi place nearby as well, but I can't remember where.

There was an organic supermarket near Altona station that sold vegan stuff, none of it that exciting. Reformhaus is a chain health food shop with some vegan things. There's a really awesome falafel place in Altona, but it's sort of down a little side-road.

General advice: "Eiweiß" looks like it means egg white as "Ei" is egg and "weiß" is white, but it generally just means protein. "Soja Eiweiß" is soy protein (not soy egg white). "Eier Eiweiß" is egg protein/egg white.

Warning: There is no guarantee that hummus does not have mayonnaise stirred into it.

Germans are wimpy when it comes to chilli and spices. English "mild" is German "hot" (scharf).

Due to marvellous purity laws, all German beer is vegan I believe. Try Astra, it's nice and it's local.

Nice place, good food. Bring cash since they don't accept cards (seems to happen alot in Germany :) ) and its really cold to try and find an atm in mid December.
Dum di dum!

If your're looking for vegan restaurants, there are the "Leaf" and the "Loving Hut".

Otherwise Hamburg has a variety of Indian restaurants. You should be able to get something vegan there.
