Cape Town, South Africa

Postby baldy » Mon Jan 31, 2011 7:46 pm

My little vegan guide to Cape Town, most of it probably applies to the whole of South Africa. Should be useful if anyone is going there on holiday.

- Frys products are available at most supermarkets and is pretty cheap
- Soya milk is available everywhere about R13 a litre roughly the same as EU prices.

.flux tipped me off about Kauai http://www.kauai.co.za/ that now sells wraps and sandwiches with frys strips in them. Had the texmex salsa yesterday and an apple and rooibos drink. Will take a picture next time I have one.

Joined Virgin Active Gym for a month, that cost R650 about €65. http://virginactive.co.za/

Will post more stuff as I come across it.

I was in Cape Town in March last year for a few weeks... ate at Kauais a few times, they had a good bean burrito and a couple of other decent vegan options but didn't have Frys on the menu at that stage. Looks like you can now replace any meat with fry's, which is pretty cool a lot more to choose from now.

My fav food in SA was falafel in pita bread, where they make the falafel fresh, and you choose your salads and they had a chili sauce that they add after... it's some healthy fast-food chain like a South African Subway, I forgot the name of the place... ok, some googling and I rediscover it's called Anat http://www.anat.co.za/ Loved their falafel pitas, worth checking out.

Combination of heat, not eating as much and going off creatine.

My next little shopping trip, still cant find the soya protein bars. Ouma condensed milk rusks are vegan!
We always take the Imana super soya mince camping, its listed as vegetarian, doesnt have any allergens listed but has "natural flavourings".

Its like polony, really awesome. I fried some up with tomatoes for breakfast or put it in a sandwich.

The ultimate thing to do with it is make a Gatsby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatsby_(sandwich)). French loaf, with polony, chips and chilli sauce.

Went for a Salad Gatsby yesterday. Available from most take aways in the cape flats (you will need to ask them about the oil they cook the chips in).

This is Sea Point pool, probably the best pool to swim in the whole world. Full Olympic 50m pool that is filled with water from the Atlantic ocean http://www.capeswim.com/seapointpool.htm

Last night had take aways from Simply Asia http://www.simplyasia.co.za/ really good tofu, brinjal and mushroom with basil and chilli.
