Vegan eating and climbing in Croatia. Any ideas?

I will be going to Croatia (Dubrovnic, then Split, outskirts of both) and wondered if anyone out there knows what the score is for eating eating out and buying vegan food. Places you'd recommend to try, or to avoid?!!


Also if you know of any places to climb out there I'd appreciate a shout.

I've not been to Dubrovnik but I was in Split the other month - http://www.veganfitness.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13929

I found a few bits and pieces such as Alpro Soya stuffs in a supermarket but as I was only there a few days I didn't do an extensive search for such.

The best things Croatia has

I always get alpro stuff even in smaller towns like Opatija. Or tofu and seitan.
Things like margarine and spread I always bring along.
Besides that I just love bread with ajvar and lot of salad.
When we go out I prefer salad, pasta, pizza without cheese or just chips/fries with ajvar.
And the markets always have a big assortment of fruits and vegetables. You won't starve.

Apparently you can find the Greek fasting cheese (which is vegan) there it's called Kolios-Nistisimo. Don't get regular Kolios though!

The kras lemon wafers are pretty good too.

Dubrovnik won't be a problem. Most of the shops are well stocked with stuff like vegetable pate and alpro products. DM stores have pretty well stocked health food sections too.

just to be on the safe side, please memorise NON VEGAN CRAP

meso - meat
mleko - milk
jaja - eggs
mleko u prahu, mlecni prah - milk powder
surutka - milk something whatever it is in english
mast - usually animal grease, fat or lard. (rarely but sometimes of vegetable origin)

i'll add more later when my brain unblocks.

like always if you steer clear of the junk food you'll be fine. if they offer you plant origin cheese in restaurants it probably isnt. most milk farms make "plant origin" whipped cream, cheese, etc out of milk (sue them).

Most of the products will have labels in English...and wouldn't it be

mlijeko....not mleko etc..

I visited Opatija in the mid 80s, when it was still 'Yugoslavia.' Very, very beautiful, although I'm sure it has changed radically. I would love to go back.
