Kohlrabi?

Postby Catt Queen » Fri May 21, 2010 9:01 pm

Just had one of these strange looking things arrive in my box... been advised it is a Kohlrabi, but any ideas on what I can do with it please?

Ooh I remember last summer my mum made/improvised/adapted a lovely dish with kohlrabi. I think she used fennel seeds and soy single cream and a bunch of other seasonings but I can't remember. I just remember not being enthused with the idea of kohlrabi for dinner, and was pleasantly surprised. I'll ask her if she remembers the recipe and get back to you!

you can peel it and eat it just like that - but i guess not many people like it like that way - so peel it and use a Grater on it - and add it to any salad ! that turns good .

I peel, chop and eat them in salads. I also like them sliced in matchsticks and stuffed in my nori rolls with others vegetables and fillings. They are really expensive here so bask in its goodness!

I ended up using it in a veg stir fry... well, what was left of it anyway as I found it was really nice raw! :D

Oops sorry I'm too late, but here's my mum's recipe, from Sophie Grigson's cookbook "The Vegetable Bible" (I think that's what it's called):

Melt 40g marg in saucepan, add 30g sugar, cook till brown. Add 800g kohlrabi peeled and cut into fingers + 2 tbsp white wine vinegar, simmer 10 min. Add 1 tbsp flour + 1/2 tsp cumin seeds and gradually stir in 250 ml veg stock. Salt and pepper to taste.

Peel and eat. They are best raw. Love them.
