gyro, you mean a souvlaki right? I have something that is kinda similar to that..

-Pita/mountain bread
-I usually use tempeh, but you could use vege burgers or i guess tofu
-Lettuce/onion/tomato
-And of course the garlic sauce...which is just crushed garlic (I use it from a jar as I hate using a mortar & pestle), soy mayonaise, and a little bit of oil...

works best if you toast the bread over a hotplate first...

mmm I think I know what's for dinner tonight 8)

There's actually a recipe for this in the Joanne Stepaniak/Farm Sanctuary cookbook Vegan Vittles.

She uses seitan for the "meat" portion and makes a special sauce that mimics the original. Sorry, I'm at work so I don't have the book with me, but if you can get a copy I'm sure that you'll be pleased.

Thanks, I'll have to pickup the book. I am looking for the spice mixture to use to simulate the taste of the spiced lamb used in carnivorous gyros for my faux meat. Also, I think the sauce may have cucumbers in it as well.

I make something like that using veggie balls from trader joes.

Omigod I have to say this- the gyros from Vegan Vittles freakin' ROCK!!!
I've done it with tofu, too: freeze, thaw, squeeze dry and slice in strips. But seitan is someting special.
