Post subject:  My breakfast
Tip a tin of tomatoes on to a plate
Nuke it in the microwave for 4 minutes.

Put as many McCains hash brownies and McCartney sausages as will fit in to your George Foreman grill.

Slice two onions.
Put them in the frying pan.
Cut a load of mushrooms in half.
Put them in with the onions.

Tip everything on top of the tomatoes.
Give it a good dollop of brown sauce.

Sit outside to eat it if the suns shining.

Brown Sauce is a working class cultural icon that is essential for the mental health of British people and the stability of our economy. It is served with most fried foods, especially breakfasts, and is also good with chi[ps and mushy peas. By far the most common brand of brown sauce is 'HP', but 'Daddies', 'Branston' and supermarket own brand versions are also available.

Brown sauce was traditionally packaged in sturdy glass bottles which had to be shaken quite a lot to get the sauce out. In recent years, squeezy plastic bottles have become popular instead.

The current 'credit crunch' is a direct result of the manufacturer deciding to close down the HP factory and produce it in Holland instead.

The End of an Era

In May, 2006 Heinz announced that Birmingham produced HP Sauce would be no more. From now on, Heinz decreed, HP Sauce would be made in Holland and imported to the British market. Outraged, the people of Birmingham rallied behind their beloved sauce. Calls for boycotts were raised, petitions were formed and calls for action ultimately culminated in a huge rally where thousands of people marched on the streets of Birmingham demanding that Heinz reverse their decision. Heinz ultimately refused, thus marking the beginning of the end for this quintessentially British brand.

Now, just over a year later, Heinz formally cut its ties with the people of Birmingham by announcing on June 29th, 2007 that the iconic HP Sauce factory on Tower Road would be facing imminent demolition.

In response, an outraged Brummie wrote me only this morning to vent his frustration:

I think Heinz’s idea is ‘if its not there we will forget’ well we ain’t forgot the first and second world war and as long as there is HP on the shelf we wont forget.

The historic HP sauce factory is located on a 2.39 hectare site in Aston and is the original site of the Midland Vinegar Company founded by Edwin Samson Moore in 1875. Along with HP Sauce and its varieties, the factory continued to produce its own vinegar into the 1990’s and utilized a unique vinegar pipeline which ran over the A38(M) (Aston Motorway). Heinz ultimately closed the factory in March, 2007 following several months of relocation efforts to shift production to the Holland plant. Demolition of the factory commenced on July 2nd, 2007 - a short 4 months after the closure.

How cool is that? not only a "vinegar pipeline" - but one going over a motorway. Wicked...and they shut it :cry:

That is one good, serious breccy :D

Id have to add baked beans and scrambled tofu and share it with several as id not manage all that but looks great!

HP sauce is great!

Not had hash browns in years good to hear there are vegan ones out there have added to shopping list :D the ones college have have whey powder in :roll:

Brown Sauce; I used to live in Solihull on the outskirts of Birmingham. I remember you could always tell which way the wind was blowing by how strong the smell of brown sauce was on the A38 (M). Years later I worked in Worcester and got the same effect from the Worcestershire Sauce factory.

Hash Browns; McCains are vegan, Tesco own brand are not. I think it's the same with potato waffles, Birds Eye = OK, Tesco = not OK, but I can never remember for sure so I always check the label first.

Tofu, baked beans etc.; That's just a typical breakfast and varies depending on what I've got in the cupboard. Tinned tomatoes/baked beans/spaghetti plus mushrooms/onions/peppers plus LMcC sausages/Sosmix. Any combination is good as long as it's got brown sauce on top.

Bird's eye potato waffles are OK. I nearly cried with relief when I saw the ingredients list, but then again I am the emotionally feeble kind.

HP stands for 'Houses of Parliament'. Nowt to do with computer hardware! I dunno why they named the sauce after the seat of British democracy. Maybe there's a story there?

You can also buy potato cakes from ASDA that are vegan. Personally, I make my own.
