Just wanted to recommend four books I've read over the years. Most of them are books on growth, nature and spirituality.

Off the top of my head and not related to growth or spirituality, mostly the opposite in fact. I feel bad for not including a Nick Hornby book, he makes my top 5 but not my top 4.

8 Minute Idle by Matt Thorne - For anyone that has ever worked in a call center.
Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams - must read for anyone even slightly geeky
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka - Its so absurd but reads so well.
Dangerous Parking by Stuart Browne - Don't watch the movie its rubbish. The book is brilliant.

A bit of patriotism: The Discovery of Heaven by Harry Mulisch. Also a movie, if you want to take the fast lane. Honest, the only thing missing in this book is a handsome vegan. (Story of my life, as well. ;) )

"A Guide To Rational Living" by Dr. Albert Ellis

He invented cognitive therapy and was voted the second most influential psychologist of all time ( #1 was Freud ) by the American Psychological Association. He continued to see patients and write books almost up until his death bed in his mid 90s.

One of the most influential and useful books I read in my entire life. If you read it, just make sure you get the latest edition and read chapters 20 - 23 first.

Way of the Peaceful Warrior - life changing - I love/d it!

Try "The Journey of Socrates" - Dan Millman - it's awesome.

Will pop back later with more

I recommend:

Cities of the Red Night - William Burroughs
History of Western Philosophy - Bertrand Russell
    Paradise Lost - John Milton
    Ariel - Sylvia Plath
The Adventures of Jimmy Corrigan - C.F. Ware

I know that's 5, but I'm a maverick.

To add weight to my recommendations, here's a picture of a tiger jumping off a boat:

I've been putting off reading Russell. (Have you red Logicomix, by the way?) Should do it now, if only to taunt my prof (he doesn't seem to like him very much :) ).

That picture is quite Life of Pi, also recommended.

Not read or heard of Logicomix, but just googled it and it looks amazing. Will get a copy soon, thanks!

Whatever you think of Russell it would be a great shame not to read his work - and the book I mention is particularly recommended, since it's not a work of his own philosophy as such (though it includes his analysis) but a survey of the history of the subject, written in his own excellent style with his usual dry wit. A real page turner, believe it or not.

Yes, Life of Pi is also an excellent read.

^Really? I remember there being a section on him, but I haven't read it in a while. How odd.

On a related note I'm reading a recently published collection called 'The Great Philosophers' which has no Hegel, no Kant, no Locke...strange.

I read philosophy of science and bailed out of Sein und Zeit halfway through (as he bailed out on writing it halfway through, apparently) so I don't know much about Heidegger, but opinion seems divided between "total genius" and "overrated bloatyhead". I can imagine why Russell would lean towards the latter, but for a history it's indeed a bit strange.

...was it published in 1630?

For those of you who liked way of the peaceful warrior - I reccomend (although I've only read snippets) - Power of Now by Ekhart Tolle. Reccomended to everyone, really.

For fiction - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time - Mark Haddon.
Although the effeminate nature of my username may suggest otherwise, my gender actually falls into the male category.

My subscription to Juggs ran out a while ago so I haven't been reading much since then...
Next time, I'll spend the money on drugs instead.
