We have a Shelter xmas card thing at work where you buy one card for every one rather than a card each, then give then savings to Shelter.

I kind of assumed Shelter would be giving turkeys to the homless so thought I'd give to vegfam or something instead.

From the website, it looks like Shelter is mainly concerned with housing though so maybe cool to donate to?

Shelter have the usual problem that institutionalised charities have - they waste money and are frightened to rock the boat. They do good work though, and were certainly helpful to me when I was once facing eviction from a squat.

I'll tell you what would make next year a quality year.

Over a dozen of us emerge, blinking, from a blistering VF meet up at the RATM gig. Then someone comes blundering through the crowd, trembling with excitement in the warm midsummer evening air. 'Thatcher's just copped it...'

We all pile into battered transit vans and hasten to Trafalgar Square, where the party is just beginning. The dawn sunlight streams through the fountains, casting rainbows all around. Someone hands me a flask of weak tea with soya milk and I shout out, 'This is the Future.'

"The worker has the right to leave his boss, but can she do it? And if she does quit him, is it in order to lead a free life; where she will have no master but herself? No, she leaves to sell herself to another employer. She's driven by the same hunger. Thus the worker's liberty is only a theoretical freedom, lacking any means of realization; an utter falsehood."
