Reggae, dub, dancehall

Can anybody recommend some good reggae/dub/dancehall artists and bands? I always liked that kind of music, but I don't really know many good bands. I usually hear it in a mix with punk/hardcore and the like.

for dub, i'd go with king tubby, mad professor, lee perry for starters.

for reggae, horace andy, heptones, eek-a-mouse, mighty diamonds, gentleman & far east band, black uhuru, prince alla, beres hammond, tenor saw, king jammy, yellow man, burning spear, etc.

dancehall and current artists, i'm not so up on, but sizzla, general degree, beenieman, sean paul, bounty killa, damian marley, collie budz, elephant man.

one caveat, there's a lot of homophobic content in some more current reggae, and some of the people i've listed might have songs that are offenseive, i couldnt tell you off the top of my head.

Thanks, omar! I already know some of the bands/artists you mentioned. And yeah - I've hear about the homophobic lyrics. I think Black Uhuru has some, if I'm not mistaken.

You should get on the Louis Farrakhan, aka The Charmer, tip. "Don't Touch Mih Nylon" is a banger. OK, so I'm going back a bit further, but I think it's important to appreciate the roots of this kind of stuff.

I mainly listen to electronic dub, a but more modern and in my view interesting take on dub. There are lots of stuff coming out of France and Germany that's well worth listening to, for example High Tone, Kaly Live Dub, Löbe Radiant Dub System, Rhythm & Sound, and Brain Damage. Also, I do enjoy Dubstep, but this is taking a bit far away from what you're asking for I guess... Personally I'm not too much into more traditional dub and reggae. As far as dancehall goes I recently discovered The Bug, dancehall beats but with a more rough edge.

I'm a big reggae fan myself. Not so into dancehall or dubstep though but I love dub.

I'd recommend (dub/reggae):

Culture, Burning Spear, Gentleman, Damien Marley, Zion Train, Bush Chemists, I Wayne, Chezidek, Luciano, Morgan Heritage, Vibronics (local Dub), Jah Marnyah (local reggae singer/DJ), Love Grocer, Israel Vibration, Black Uhuru etc.

There are quite a few compilations about (eg. Bobo Revolution) that are worth a try if you're not sue which artists you like, as you get 10 or so different artists on the same album.

I don't recall specifically if any of them are (none that I know of).

Zion Train, Bush Chemists, Luciano, Vibronics (local Dub) and Love Grocer definately aren't - although Luciano is the only one of those that isn't dub.

Luciano always has positive uplifting lyrics although a fair bit of his music is a bit 'soft' for my taste - but the suff of his that I like, I really like.

I think you'll come across more homophobes in dancehall than in roots reggae or dub.
