odd foot dircetion

Postby not_a_slave » Wed Oct 19, 2005 2:40 pm

this may be an ignorant or slightly dumb question to ask, but what is it called when foot points more outward than the other?
my right foot points more to the outside than my left, which points just about straight.

p.s. are there shoes made for this?

There are shoes made for this - it is called either over or under pronation, can't remember which, and if you do google searches you can find shoes specific to the problem.

Try runners world for some good advice.

Both my feet used to stick out at a position like ten to two on a clock face. After a few years of karate they tend to point in the right direction now, so it can gradually improve. You will have to be careful with your ankles though, I would imagine.

Special shoes have something in them called a "last", which is designed to correct specific problems. As far as I know, they help. Fortunately my feet are okay now, so I can't vouch for any kind of shoe. But I do know people who swear by them (including my brother.)

Is one of your ankles weaker than the other? Is it only when you run? Or is it as your legs get tireder?

my foot always does this, even when walking.

also, since i have been running seriously for about a month, i notice that my left calf and glut tend to get sore while running, whats up with that? is it because of the odd direction of my right foot or what?

Your right foot is in a permanent state of abduction. Pronation is slightly different, that describes the movement of the foot whilst running if you land on the outside of your heel and roll over to the inside of your forefoot.

A shoe might help but it wouldn't treat the cause, it sounds like it could well be a problem that originates at another joint such as your hip. The pain on your left side could be due to your body compensating for this. If it's causing you problems it's probably worth seeing a podiatrist to get your gait analysed.
