working up to a marathon

Postby Wishin986 » Thu Jun 16, 2005 3:54 am

Ok so I've decided that I really want to work up to being able to run a marathon - but I'de have to basically start from scratch. I can run a couple miles outside if I'm with someone but I havn't in a couple months so I'de really just rather get advice for working up from the beginning.

Any ideas? I'm not usually good with running outside but I really want to get better so possible intervals of working out and what time of day is best and where you all like to run the most would really help out! thanks!

When do you want to run a marathon? Do you want to finish, ore do you've got a time you want to reach?

for a marathon I would say that you've to run a minimum of 70/80 km a week (>100 would be better), but if you take one year for it you canstart a bit smaller. Did you run some half marathon/ 10 mile?

When you start it's good to make a 3 up to 5 week routine building up and go back to the second week distance and go a litle further every periode. Personally I never run a marathon, but I train in a group with some people who did so I know some things about it.

last 3 months you should have 5 trainings a week (100/ 120 km)..

Do you know the location of your marathon? Cold, with hils,... warm,.....
