Brisbane Marathon

The Brisbane Running Festival is on in August. I'll be running the marathon and fundraising for Animals Australia. My target time is 3:30. I currently run 10km in 45min and 21km in 1:45 so I think I can do it. Anyone got a favourite training plan for a 3:30 marathon?

Looking at your current training I would change a few things : speed down, mileage up. I you want to complete a marathon it doesn't make much sense that you do most of your mileage only a few sec/km slower than your 10k pr. I like to use http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/ in combination with how I feel for my training paces.

Thanks for the link. That's a helpful site. I'll will be increasing my mileage over the next few weeks. I currently run about 40-50 km a week. I finished the Brisbane marathon in 2010 in 4:16:42. I've done a lot of work since then so I know I can finish a lot faster. Maybe I'm being too ambitious. We'll see in 4 months I guess.

Prime, your 10k time doesn't necessarily correlate with your marathon time, so I don't think that's too important, unless you were doing very specific 10k training when you ran that time. I like to look at half marathon times as a predictor. A good formula for marathon prediction is 2 x half marathon time + ten minutes. So for you that would be 3:40. However, it appears you are looking to train harder for the Brisbane Marathon, so 3:30 is definitely possible. I'd say you should go for it. Good luck!

Just FYI, my best marathon is only 20 seconds per mile slower than my best 10k.

Nah, I think it's possible. I also think that you can probably run a faster hm at the moment than 1:45:00.

You're probably right. That time isn't for a race, just a training run. Thanks for your support. I am looking to train hard for the marathon and I'm pretty determined.

Just a couple comments. If you ran exactly a half marathon on a training run for your time, it might be a bit slower than if it were on a certified course. Courses are designed to be the exact distance only if you take the absolute shortest route, which is not likely going to occur in a race. I've run marathons with my GPS watch, only to find that the total distance was over a half mile longer than what I planned to run. And I thought I was running the tangents very well too. Just something to keep in mind. However, when you're in a race situation, the crowds and other race participants will help carry you along. Not that I'm saying your time is not worth considering - just that a race time is more reliable.

Not sure if I gave any useful information, but thought I'd chime in.

Thanks DC Runner. You've got some good points there. I think my pace would be a little faster in a race, but hadn't considered the distance variation.
