Do you eat and run?

Postby Nikko » Wed Oct 17, 2012 4:21 am

Hey all,

Just wondering what you guys and girls like to consume before a run. I usually have a smoothie about an hour or so before hand but sometimes have trouble with cramps. I know some peeps like to run on empty but I tend flop about halfway if I do this.

What's you're fuel choice for a long run??

I'm not really running much these days but used to. Training runs didn't have much of a structure regarding food, I used to make sure I hadn't eaten large amounts too recently. If it was early morning I would usually eat cereal.

Race days were better structured - larger breakfast, maybe
beans on toast,
fried sausages, waffles, mushrooms and onion
fried bananas and syrup

Two cups of tea 90 minutes before the gun was usually part of the routine too.
You can see my training log if you're really bored: www.veganfitness.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16086&start=360

Greetings.
It really depends how far and where I am going to run if I eat before a run. (that's a polite way of saying depends if there is a toilet on the route. In other words, if I ever come back from a run and I am missing both sleeves and a sock....don't ask any questions. ) No matter the distance of the run I have had really strong and consistent success with Juice Plus Complete and Chia seeds mixed in soy milk before running. Occasionally I will eat half of a whole grain bagel and a small banana before running, but really not much else.

For a long run, I have a reasonably sized breakfast, usually porridge / cereal. Then leave it for about 2 hours before starting for run.
For a shorter run, I might just eat an apple, then go out running about 10 minutes later or so.

If I eat too much before running I often end up feeling a bit sick. So I try not too eat much.

Yep, I find that I need fuel but I can easily overdo it. Smoothies seem to work but do make for a gassy situation sometimes haha!

My favourite before a long run is either porridge, or bagel/toast with some peanut butter. With coffee, of course! If it's an evening long run I just snack on whatever depending on how hungry I am. I seem to have "adapted" myself so that I can run on a full stomach as long as it is not an intensity work out, and I can eat pretty much right before I go. For intensity I don't eat for a couple of hours ahead of time and go for something easy to digest.

Lately I've been running 10k most mornings and I just have a glass of water and a slice of bread right before I go. Seems to get me through ok.

How long have you been doing the smoothie before running method? Can take time for your gut to get used to it. GI distress w/ smoothies can also be an issue with not enough water in the smoothie, or sometimes even too much, maybe experiment a bit?
