Sore groins when running.

Postby kallefs » Sun Sep 30, 2012 2:35 pm

I tend to get a bit of pain in the groins when running, nothing serious but irritating that it shows up at all. It comes after about 3-4 km and stops as fast as I stop running. It seems to help to push the hip forward and have better posture so will try to work on that but is there anything else I could and should do? Stretching, strengthening...something?

This sounds very serious! Just to clarify - how many groins are we talking about here?

Sorry to hear - I've had tightness in the groin, not sure if it's similar, but yeah it was stretching AFTER running (and between running) that sorted it (i.e. not just a quick 3 minute stretch before .. which is my usual slack attempt)

Hope it gets better!

I sense that I have made some sort of language error :) Is there only groin and not groins? There is one at each side so presumed there should be plural.

It is not a big problem for now but thought I might as well take care of before it gets bigger. So lots of stretching it is. Thanks!

I developed some serious groinal pain after racing a half marathon a couple years back. The pain would only be there while running and was at its worst when running at speed. It was definitely just one side that was hurting. I went to a chiropractor to get treatment (A.R.T. - Active Release Technique) and he said it was psoas tendonitis. He gave me this stretch (http://lauralovesfitness.files.wordpres ... smile1.jpg), which worked wonders. I would go deep into this stretch after all runs and the pain was gone within a month or two.

Maybe some yoga would help. I've been recommended this video for yoga for runners: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjGlXtbKCPg

Both of those will come in handy, thanks!

Another thing, I stretch after each run because you are supposed to stretch when you are warm, or that was what I learned as a kid. Is this wisdom still true or can I just do some stretching in the evening before bed or any other time, as long as I don't over do it? I figure it would be beneficial to do it every day when I had some time over and not just those days when I have been running.

Yes, singular: groin. Refers to the region. If you have 2 you are VERY special - or referring to your testes perhaps.

This makes me chuckle for some reason...

Thanks! I honestly did not know what/where exactly the groin was until now. After seeing the photo you shared & doing some reading, now I do. :)

So you thought kallefs was looking for stretching exercises for the genitals?

Pretty much. I thought he was saying that his testes were swollen and sore after running...

After reading the thread again with that view I can understand your confusion :) Luckily no enlarged balls or anything when running, in that case I am pretty sure I would just stop :)

No need for that - just LOTS of stretching, warm them up like you did as a kid & make sure to keep strengthening them! ;-p

Greetings and salutations.
There are different reasons why the groin (or adductor) muscles can become pained during running. The adductor muscles are responsible for a significant amount of stabilization during running and are often ignored in warm up/cool down and in strengthening exercises with weights. You stated adjustments to your posture relieve the pain, which makes me wonder about some of your mechanics. What type of foot do you have and are your shoes appropriate? Do you run perhaps run either bow legged knock kneed? Do you feet remain straight when you run or do they turn? A common mistake that runners make is focusing on movements only in the sagital plane (the forward and backward movements similar to running). Many runners forget one of the basic warm ups: cariocas. Another good exercise is clockwork lunges. (Starting with feet together, lunge to 12. Return to starting postion then lunge with the other foot to 12. Return to starting position. Without moving left foot, lunge to 1. Return. Without moving right foot, lunge to 11....etc all the way around the clock. Do this with or with out weights.) Another strong exercise that will benefit you is dead lifts. There are other things that a body worker (physiotherapist, massage therapist, etc) can do for you, but these are a good place for you to start.

Cheers.
