Conflicts with running?

So, I've gotten into a groove of running 4 miles a day, pretty much 7 days a week. I'm in high school, but I don't do any organized sports, so running is my main thing that I do after school. However, I am in the marching band, which takes up a good amount of time in the fall. I have recently become more serious with my running, and so, marching band now is an issue.

Nearly every Friday we have a football game, which the band performs at. Trouble is, I don't have enough time in between school and the game to get in my run unless I want to be absolutely rushing my guts out. If I run in between, I will literally have no time to eat dinner (not a good thing). I have thought about running in the morning on the days I can't run after school, but that would mean having to get up at around 4:30 in the morning, which seems a bit extreme to me, and I'm sure my mom won't be too fond of the idea, either.

I will already be running every other day of the week (as my schedule will permit, i.e., with the occasional skip day if I am extremely busy), including running before our Wednesday and Saturday band practices. Marching band is not nearly as rigorous a sport as running, especially because I conduct, so I am mostly standing there waving my arms about.

I'm worried that missing one or two days per week during the marching band/football season will do two things:

1) Reduce my fitness

2) Cause me to gain weight, as I will not be running as much as I usually do

Is there any reason for me to be concerned, or am I worrying too much? I will not be sitting on my butt doing nothing, yes, but I will not be doing anything as strenuous as running is. Should I just not run on the days I don't have time, or should I try to make time? I'm planning on picking back up my normal schedule as soon as the season is over, but I'd like to hear other's opinions as well.

For running, I think it is a good idea to have some rest days. In terms of improving fitness and avoiding injury, you need to give our body time to recover. So I don't think it is helpful to run every single day. And make sure you are getting plenty sleep, getting up very early in the morning probably won't help.
So I'd say don't worry about it. Also to improve fitness, it would probably help to to vary the running a bit. ie try some longer runs, or some shorter faster runs, instead of just getting stuck in the same thing every time.

Agreed.

Running 3-4 times a week is optimal, 7 days a week is overdoing it.

It doesn't seem, based on your post, that you have objectives like training for a marathon--you're just doing running for fitness and weight maintenance, I presume?
If this is the case, there is absolutely no reason why running 3x a week won't be just fine. How many miles do you run per day? Another thing to consider is tacking on a few more miles on the days that you do run...if you're doing 4 miles now, 6 certainly won't hurt, and you'll build your endurance.

Hey Satt,

I run 6 times a week. Nothing wrong with running most days - but if you are looking to be able to adjust your running to fit in the band, then that's exactly what you should do .. adjust your running and not just do the same :)

So you are currently doing 4 x 7 = 28 miles. You can run a couple of days less and still get the same amount of miles, or the same amount of calories burned. This will actually make you 1) raise fitness 2) not cause weight gain (or any gain will be muscle not fat)

It's been suggested before that you look at doing some different kind of running - like Colleen says you could raise a couple of your runs run by a couple of miles each. You could also do one of the other runs faster / or add intervals of speed. By adding miles & speed to some of your runs you will retain the fitness and calories burned, and the extra rest days will help your body deal with these changes.

Training the same way every day means the body gets used to it and your fitness gains plateau - so actually this could be seen as a benefit for your running, and you get to do band too :)

You also say that your band practice is quite physical in that you're on your feet and waving your arms around. See this as cross-training that compliments your running and it might not seem so conflicting.
