I find that having the garmin 310xt lets me pace myself smart. Its tempting to go out faster than race pace but that means you just slow up later on 100%. I look back at running races in the past and treated them like bike races where you must go with the lead pack so you get the slip stream.
I dont think Im that much fitter than when running 40 for 10k but its just that Im smarter with pacing instead of going out like a hero and blowing up. I do a 20min easy jog for a warm up with a few strides and make sure Im racing on an empty stomach and then drink/carb up right after the finish line and do a cool down jog/walk.
Ive also been going to bed way earlier and doing that consistently.
