strength training for sprinters?

Postby Meshounah » Mon Nov 22, 2010 3:59 pm

I happened to notice that a lot of sprinters are pretty buff, unlike marathoners. conventional wisdom says that upper body strength increases your weight, but not speed. so what is the benefit?

That's vegan poster-boy Carl Lewis, right? 8)

I guess explosive strength helps on short and fast distances.
This was evident at the track and field challenge at VFW, where the big powerlifters
were better sprinters than pretty much everyone else! :)

Weight penalty in terms of extra load to carry and larger muscles that needs more oxygen and energy is low in short sprints. Long distances running is, albeit also being done on foot, a completely different sport.

Upper body strength, particularly a strong back and abs, helps you squat more and clean more. Squatting more and cleaning more helps you run faster (Charlie Francis Ben Johnson had his athletes do nothing but heavy squats and power cleans, after speed work on the track).
“Begin at the beginning,” the King said gravely, “and go on till you come to the end. Then stop.”

on wikipedia there is an explanation that makes much sence.

basically that the faster you go the more energy you need to keep your (entire) body straight, in order not to loose much energy. running economy (using your resources in the most optimal way).
