Does running hurt?

Postby Herbsman » Sun Nov 21, 2010 6:56 pm

I find that a hard 120 mile cycling day doesn't leave me feeling fucked up enough. Will 30 miles of runninng destroy me enough so much that I don't need to go back to drinking alcohol and eating chips or should I find a harsher athletic activity? Bearing in mind I wanna feel so ruined that I cant move...

Then you need to learn to ride faster. ;) Make that a hard 120 mile "four-five hours" being thrashed by others, and then see how you feel.

It's really hard to compare the two. Often after a really bad long run I think, nothing is as bad as this; then I have a bad long ride and realise I was wrong. If you want to feel wrecked for some days afterward, running is probably better. :| I see some ultras in your future. Have a look at Badwater and see if you can make it to it.

as a triathlete id say its easier to feel better after with a hard bike compared to a really hard run, but it all compares about the exertion. during an ironman, only half of your total energy is spent after the 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile back. the rest of the energy is done after the 26.2 mile run which is usualy, roughly, 1/2-3/4 of the time of the bike

so ya if each sport is done in roughly zone 2 heart rate work, the run will be a lot harder

I diiiid say four-five hours. You'd have to agree that might hurt a little bit tho, no?

I have done 160km in under 3hr40 is that close enough :)

if you run 1500 in a decent speed it takes 2 days to breed properly again.

Yeah - I reckon you can wreck yourself more with a long run... I think it takes a greater toll on your body in comparative distances. 30 miles is OK and will make you sore for a day or so, 50 miles will mean you'll be ruined for a few days, but you'll always be able to move to the fridge :-). I haven't been able to wreck my legs that much without doing 300+ miles on the bike, but I don't ride that fast.

Aye, I think running definitely affects you in a different way, depending on exactly what sort of pain you are after you could go for the long run option, or maybe a super-hard interval session. As runner says even the mile distance can wreck you. My ultimate recommendation though would be fell-running - no other form of racing has made me feel so comprehensively smashed.

doesn't it depend on how you react to exercise? I tend to be wired if I do vast amounts which might make me more likely to have a drink...

On a calm day I would say running is harder but when it's really windy, cycling is pure torture.

Level of exertion will make a difference.

If cycling by itself is not enough- hop off the bike and grab some runing shoes and toss in a 5- 10 mile workout

Another thought:

By mixing up the workouts you can keep the muscles on edge and growing. This is the basic idea of programs like P90X and Crossfit and others that change-up regularly.
