great northern run - vegan team?

Postby JP » Mon Sep 20, 2010 8:44 am

It was mentioned in The Vegan (vegan sociaty mag) that there would have been 12 vegans running at the great northern run. Does anyone know anything about this, and how did they do?

Vegan Fiona Oakes came FIRST female of the masses - don't know how many females but 54,000 runners total so that's a big 1st!

Seems the BBC didn't want anyone to know though :x

Not sure about the rest of Team Vegan as yet.

Rattle, rattle!

From what I can make of the results 1st woman elite was 1:08:49 to Fiona's 1:20:51. There seem to be 27 female elite finishers, Fiona's time would have made her 20th of them. The last few elite women were very slow though so however they select them it can't just be on time (maybe time for age?)

Elite are usually selected by past results, but if people never run a half they can also select based on 10k for example. There might be pacemakers in the field.
The organisation can give young talent a chance to run in elite field.

It also has to do with managers etc. Not sure if Fiona has a manager.

and money. Every race has a buget therefore they can't just fly over the best 25 runners. Also you have to take into consideration that some runners don't want to run this race, because they might have an other schedule or just don't feel like it.

Fiona might also have generated more atention by winning this race instead of number 20 in the elite field. It can even be her personal choise...

Therefore best to ask the organisation how they select runners.

Anyway Fiona is my hero.

Fiona's time/performance is even better considering that she started in the masses! I've done the GNR many times and in my experience from starting in the masses it isn't worth trying for a good performance you just have to enjoy the experience of running with so many people. If you try to run fast you are constantly having to dodge past other runners who started way further forward than they should have or who overestimated what they can do ... or just get stuck in the general people congestion. One year I had to walk the first two miles because it was physically impossible to run there were so many people.
find the edge of the hurt envelope - and push...
