how fast can ha run a marathon?

Postby ha » Fri Jul 25, 2008 1:59 pm

ive got the adelaide marathon end of august. but ive only ran 135km this year from jan 1st to july 25th.... so thats not much time left to do some miles..lol!

ive got some bike fitness that helps. but nothing beats the bone jarring impact of slap'n ya feet on tarmac for 42km...

what times you reckon i will be able to run this marathon?

oranges for dinner should be right eh?

Do you have any times from your training runs?
What kind of minutes per mile or kilometer are you training at?

Clearly you are a good athlete and have the endurance so you should post a decent time.

What time would you like?

You are obviously aerobically very fit from all the cycling you do and you look like a light and lean guy. However running is very different from cycling in terms of muscles being used. It's difficult to predict not knowing your background but I reckon if you did a few months proper running training and remained injury free you could knock out a sub 3.

Lance Armstrong did a marathon recently and managed 2hr58 (i think). He is a guy with a VO2 max of over 90. I think he kept having problems with shin splints during training. He looked like he had beefed up a bit as well since his cycling days. I went for a bike ride with a friend who is a 14.18 5k runner. He was so bad it was funny. Being a good runner doesn't necessarily mean you will be a good cyclist and vice versa.

Just realised that the marathon is at the end of august. Doesn't leave much time - I predict 3hr30 and a lot of pain  .

Well, I'd be shocked if you didn't finish given you're apparent fitness levels.

You are light and have great aerobic ability.

Don't think you run much though.

You are, however, a stubborn arrogant sod who just wouldn't commit to this if you expected failure.

I ran my first 1/2 at 8 1/2 minute pace without training and I think you'll top that.

Lets say 8 minute pace and chuck the last 300 metres in for free which give 208.

Predicted time from The Duke ...

3 hours 28 minutes.

3 hours 10. I think you'd be much more competitive over a half marathon, I think the lack of running miles will take it's toll towards the end. But you ain't gonna be slow :)

Good luck with the marathon, you look to be very fit, and light in bodyweight which is a great help when running.

I'm with whippet.

i don't know if you have run a 1/2 marathon yet, but I'd cut my teeth on that first. I'm training my butt off for some 1/2 marathons coming up, and when i start to get into my long days (16 miles) it's never a guarantee that i'm going to complete the workout. I know i'm not ready for a marathon yet. We're all different, but the marathon is quite a beast...i wouldn't just jump into it.

ive NEVER ran more than 300km in a year..but i plan 2008 to be the first.

ive kept training diarys for the last 10 years. so i can be accurate when i say ive never ran 300km in a whole year...

having said that, ive ran a few marathons. best was 3:06. best half marathon was 1:22:35. both as a vegan. heck i always wanted to run marathons as a kid..shortly after i went vegan i found the energy to run em.

i ran 16km this morn. uphill for 8km and downhill for 8km. at about 9 beats under my predicted marathon heartrate..

i will give it a few days and recover on the bike.

im gonna run in some really cushioned shoes..like nike air pegasus or somethin'. i will lose some time with the extra grams but the impact protection will let my aerobic capacity be able to continue to the finish line.

im look'n forward to it...
