Apologize for the teaser title. :)

So, I have taken my training miles up a notch and so far so good. I'm doing it very very slowly like the professionals recommend. I'm listening to what my body is telling me in regards to pain, and so far so good I think. No injuries as of yet. But... I have this itchy feeling in my shins. Is this the beginning of the shin splints? It's not much of a pain, more of a tiny annoyance like a mosquito bite really. So if this is the beginning of shin splints, what can I do to prevent it from getting worse? I'd like to nip this in the bud as early as possible.

All comments appreciated, I couldn't find anything about "itchy shins are the first sign of shin splints" on the intertubes...

sorry, and happy, to say i dont have any personal experience with shin splints. but have read up more on strengthening your shins with this exercise... i think ill try it tonight

Recommend you to be really careful. When I first started running at the age of 18 I didn't really pay any attention on training techniques, shoes etc. and got REALLY bad shin splints. This really stopped all the training because every time they healed and I started training again I got the shin splints back (this is normal according to the doctor I visited). Finally I got so frustrated that I quit running totally. Now, 6 years later I started again, being much smarter. What I do after every running season (and highly recommend you as well), I massage the shins (just press up and down your shins with your thumbs with the help of body lotion, massage oil etc.) and then I massage my calves as well. As I am really scared that I get the shin splints back I have been really careful with this and noticed that there can take place little itching, pain and odd feeling in the shins but this does not necessarily mean that I am getting the shin plints again.

So just be careful and give a quick self-massage after every run.
